Paige’s POV

I stared at the symbol on Ethan’s laptop, and the longer I looked at it, the more uncomfortable I became.

It was nothing complicated at first glance, because it looked like three narrow lines crossing around a small black circle, but something about the shape made my stomach tighten.

Charlotte stood on the other side of the table, and she hadn’t taken her eyes from the screen since Ethan had shown her the photograph.

“You’ve seen it before?” I asked and she nodded slowly.

“Inside Victor’s office.” Charlotte said.

Jace stood beside me, his arms folded across his chest.

“You’re certain?” Jace asked.

“I am.” She said.

Her voice was quieter than usual, and that alone caught my attention.

Charlotte had always been confident, even when she was lying, but tonight she looked genuinely unsettled so Ethan turned the laptop toward her.

“Tell us exactly where you saw it.” Ethan said and Charlotte swallowed.

“Victor kept several files locked inside a cabinet in his office, and I wasn’t supposed to know they existed.” She said.

“You opened the cabinet?” Derek asked.

“No.” She said as she shook her head.

“I saw the symbol on a document when Victor had the cabinet open.” She said.

“What kind of document?” Derek asked.

“I don’t know.” She said.

“You don’t remember anything else?” He asked.

“I remember Victor being angry.” She said as Jace stepped closer.

“What did he say?” Jace asked as Charlotte looked at him.

“He said the files belonged to Mr. Black.” Charlotte said and the room became silent as I glanced at Jace.

His expression hardened immediately.

“Did you ever meet Mr. Black?” Jace asked.

“No.” She said.

“Did you ever see him?” Jace asked.

“No.” She said.

“Then how do you know the name?” Jace asked.

“Because Victor talked about him.” She answered as Charlotte lowered her eyes.

“Not often, but enough that I knew the name mattered.” Charlotte said and Ethan pulled another chair toward the table.

“Sit down.” Ethan said but Charlotte hesitated before sitting and he opened a new file and started typing.

“What exactly did Victor say?” Ethan asked.

“Sometimes he would mention him when something went wrong.” Charlotte said.

“Give me an example.” Ethan said and Charlotte rubbed her hands together.

“Once, Victor was furious because one of his men had lost money.” Charlotte said.

“How much?” Ethan asked.

“I don’t remember.” She said.

“What did he say?” Ethan asked and Charlotte took a breath.

“He said, ‘Mr. Black won’t tolerate another mistake.” Charlotte said.

I remembered the recording. Those words had already been burned into my mind, but hearing Charlotte repeat them made the room feel colder.

“You heard that directly?” I asked.

“Yes.” She said.

“And you never asked who Mr. Black was?” I asked as Charlotte gave me a bitter smile.

“Would you have asked Victor?” She asked.

I couldn’t argue with that and Ethan continued typing.

“So you never met him, you never spoke to him, and you don’t know what he looks like.” Ethan said.

“No.” Charlotte said.

“Do you know whether Victor worked directly for him?” Ethan asked.

“I think so.” Charlotte said.

“You think?” Ethan said as Charlotte looked at him.
