CHAFTER 157-2

Uncle Will had written about everything. He recorded birthdays, repairs, customer complaints, weather changes, and even the names of dogs belonging to regular customers

Yet when it came to the warehouse investigation, there were gaps.

Huge gaps and I frowned.

“Look at this.” I said as Jace moved closer.

“What?” He asked.

“These pages are missing.” I said.

“How many?” He asked.

“Six.” I said and he studied the binding.

“Could they have fallen out?” He asked.

“No. The stitching is intact.” I said shaking my head and Jace’s expression hardened.

“Someone removed them.” Jace said.

“I think so.” I said.

That realization made me close the journal again.

I had spent hours trying to find answers, but all I was discovering were more questions and I leaned back

in the chair.

“I’m stopping.” I said as Jace looked surprised.

“You’re stopping?” Jace asked.

“For tonight.” I said and he smiled.

“That might be the smartest thing you’ve said all evening.” He said.

“I don’t want to spend every waking minute chasing something we don’t understand.” I said.

“You don’t have to.” He said.

I looked at the journals stacked across the table.

“If we keep finding pieces, we’ll investigate them, but I’m not going to let this consume me.” I said.

Jace reached across the table and took my hand.

“That is exactly what I wanted to hear.” He said.

“I still want answers.” I said.

“So do I.” He said.

“But I have a business to run, and I have a life.” I said as his thumb brushed over my knuckles.

“You do.” He said and I smiled.

“And I like my life.”+said.

“I know.” He said.

We gathered the journals carefully, and I carried them toward the secure cabinet.

Before locking them away, I opened the oldest one one final time.

I don’t know why I did it. Maybe it was habit. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe some part of me simply wasn’t ready to close the book.

I flipped through the pages once more, and then I stopped.

There it was.

A faint sketch in the corner of a page and my heart skipped.

“Jace.” I said as he turned around.

“What?” He asked and I pointed so he came closer.

The drawing was barely visible, because the ink had faded over the years, but there was no mistaking it.

Three lines. A small circle. The same symbol and I stared at it.

“This wasn’t here before.” I said as Jace looked at me.

“You’ve already searched this journal.” He said.

“I know.” I said and he examined the page.

“Maybe we missed it.” He said as I shook my head.

“I don’t think so.” I said.

The sketch was drawn in Uncle Will’s handwriting, and beneath it there was no explanation.

No name. No date. No warning.

Nothing.

Just the symbol.

I traced the air above it without touching the paper.

“Why would he draw this?” I asked.

“Maybe he saw it somewhere.” Jace said.

“Where?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” He said as I closed the journal.
