CHAPTER 158-1

Diesel was still growing when the sound of an engine reached us from the road, and Jace immediately stepped between me and the darkness beyond the garage.

Derek appeared from the side of the building with his phone in his hand.

“I don’t see anyone.” Derek said.

Diesel growled again, but this time his attention shifted toward the driveway.

A motorcycle came into view and it wasn’t one of ours.

The rider moved slowly, and there was something wrong about the way he was sitting on the bike, because his shoulders were hunched and his head kept turning toward the road behind him so Jace’s hand lifted slightly.

“Stay where you are.” Jace ordered and the motorcycle stopped.

The rider killed the engine and removed his helmet.

He looked young.

He couldn’t have been more than his mid-twenties, and although I didn’t recognize him, the cut of his leather vest told me exactly where he came from.

A Black Reapers prospect patch was stitched across his chest and Derek immediately moved closer.

“Don’t make any sudden moves.” Derek said as the young man raised both hands.

“I don’t want trouble.” He said as Jace studied him.

“Then why are you here?” Jace asked as the prospect looked toward the road again.

“I need help.” He said as his voice shook.

That caught my attention because the Black Reapers we had encountered before had never sounded frightened when they came looking for trouble.

This man sounded terrified and Jace glanced at Derek before looking back at him.

“Get off the bike.” Derek said.

The prospect hesitated, but then he climbed off and placed his helmet on the seat.

Diesel moved closer to me, still watching him carefully and the prospect noticed the dog.

“He doesn’t like me.” The kid said.

“Diesel doesn’t trust many people.” I said and the young man nodded.

“I don’t blame him.” He said and Jace kept his attention fixed on him.

“What’s your name?” Jace asked.
