Caleb sat un a chair while Jace remained standing.

I poured him a glass of water and he accepted it with both hands.

“Thank you.” He said.

“Start talking.” I said and Caleb nodded.

“I joined the Black Reapers because I thought it was about brotherhood.” Caleb said and Derek gave a humorless laugh.

“It rarely is.” Derek said as Caleb looked embarrassed.

“I know that now.” Caleb said as he took a drink.

“I started hearing things after the first attack on Lawson Customs.” He continued and my attention sharpened.

“What kind of things?” I asked.

“People talking about another target.” Caleb said and Jace’s expression hardened.

“What target?” Jace asked.

“I don’t know.” Caleb said.

“Then what do you know?” Jace asked as Caleb looked frustrated.

“I heard them talking about a place.” Caleb said.

“What place?” Jace asked.

“They never said the name.” Caleb said.

“Did you see anything?” Jace asked.

“Some of it.” Caleb said as he lowered his voice.

“There were maps.” He said.

“Of what?” Jace asked.

“I don’t know.” He said.

“Caleb.” Jace said.

“I swear I don’t know.” He said and Jace stared at him.

Caleb looked genuinely frightened, and I believed that fear was real. He wasn’t acting like someone trying to manipulate us.
