CHAPTER

CHAPTER 169-1

Jace’s POV

Derek’s words changed the atmosphere around the campsite immediately, because nobody laughed anymore, and every person sitting around the fire looked toward the tree line.

“How fresh?” I asked.

“Fresh enough that I would not ignore them.” Derek replied and I stood and looked toward the darkness.

“Could be another camper.” I said.

“There are no other campers supposed to be using this section.” Derek said.

That answer settled heavily between us and I turned toward Mason and the other club members.

“Get the families together.” I ordered.

Nobody argued and Emma gathered the children, while Sophia started calling the dogs back toward the tents. Paige stood near the fire with Diesel beside her, and I could see the concern in her expression.

“I’m going with Derek.” I told her.

“I know.” She said.

“Stay with Emma and Sophia.” I said.

“I will.” She said.

I walked toward Derek, and Mason followed us.

“Take two more men and check the western side. Nobody goes farther than necessary, and nobody separates.” I said as Derek nodded.

Within minutes, the security team had spread through the surrounding bushland, while the families remained together near the campsite.

I kept my flashlight low as I followed the tracks away from the clearing, because the ground was soft enough to show the tire marks clearly.

“They came in from here.” Derek said and I crouched beside the tracks.

“How many bikes?” I asked.

“One for certain, possibly two.” Derek said.

“Can you tell how long ago?” I asked.

“Not exactly, but the edges are still sharp.” Derek said as I looked toward the trees.

“Keep moving.” I said.

We followed the tracks through the bush, but whoever had ridden through here had chosen a path that

eventually connected with a narrow service roach and Mason stopped ahead of us.

“Tracks are harder to see here.” Mason said.

Derek walked farther along the road before crouching again.

“They continue.” Derek said.

We followed them for another several hundred yards, and eventually the tracks joined a larger road leading toward the highway and Derek pointed toward the pavement.

“They disappear here.” Derek said as I stared at the road.

“So whoever came here left through the highway.” I said.

“Looks that way.” Derek said.

“Any sign they stopped?” I asked.

“No.” He said.

“Any sign they came back?” I asked and Derek shook his head.

“Nothing.” Derek said.

I stood and looked back toward the campsite.

The answer should have made me feel better, but it didn’t.

If someone had come here to attack us, they would have stayed close enough to strike.

Instead, they had parked or ridden close enough to watch us, then left without being seen.

“They were watching us.” I said as Derek nodded.

“That’s what I think.” Derek said as Mason looked between us.

“Why?” Mason asked.

“Because they never approached the campsite, and they never tried to interfere with anyone.” Derek said.

“They could have been waiting.” Mason said.

“They could have. But they didn’t.” I agreed and Derek looked toward the highway.

“Maybe they wanted to know where we were staying.” Derek said.

“Or who was here.” I said.
