CHAPTER 169-2

“Yes.” I said.

“Did you find anyone?” She asked.

“No.” I said and she looked toward the tree line.

“Do you think they were watching us?” She asked.

“I do.” He said and her expression tightened.

“Victor?” She asked.

“I don’t know.” I said.

That was the truth, and I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise.

The families stayed together for the rest of the night, and the security team established a wider watch around the campsite.

Nobody panicked, because there was no immediate threat, but everyone remained alert.

The children eventually went to bed, although some of them asked why the adults were suddenly carrying flashlights and checking the surrounding area.

Emma kept them calm, and Sophia helped settle the younger ones as Paige sat beside me near the fire.

“You think this weekend was a mistake?” She asked.

“No.” I said.

“Even after someone followed us?” She asked as I looked at her.

“No, because if we stop doing normal things every time someone threatens us, then they control our lives.” I said and she nodded.

“I agree.” She said as I reached for her hand.

“We just need to be smarter.” I said as she squeezed my fingers.

“I can live with that.” She said.

The fire burned lower as the night continued, and eventually the campsite became quiet.

The next morning, everyone packed up earlier than planned, because nobody wanted to spend another night wondering who might be watching from the trees.

The ride home was controlled and orderly, and the security bikes stayed around the families throughout the journey.

When we reached the clubhouse, everyone returned safely, and the tension finally began to ease.

The children were excited to be home, the dogs were exhausted, and the adults gathered inside to

discuss what had happened.

Derek placed the photos of the tracks on the table.

“We checked the entire area again before-leaving.” Derek said.

“And?” I asked.

“Nothing.” He said.

“Any cameras nearby?” I asked.

“Nothing useful.” He said and I studied the photos.

“Then we assume someone wanted information.” I said.

“That’s my assessment.” Derek said as Paige stood beside me.

“What happens now?” She asked.

“We keep watching.” Derek said and she nodded.

“We always do.” She said.

The rest of the afternoon passed without another incident, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the weekend had been a warning.

Someone had found us. Someone had watched us. And whoever it was had chosen not to attack.

That meant they were either waiting for the right opportunity, or they wanted us to know that they could reach us whenever they wanted.

Neither possibility sat well with me.

Later that evening, I was in the clubhouse office when my phone buzzed.

I looked at the screen. Unknown number so I answered cautiously.

“Hello?” I answered.

Nothing.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the phone before setting it down and a few minutes later, Damien walked into the room.

“We need to talk.” He said as I looked at him.

“About what?” I asked and he hesitated.

“My phone just rang.” He said.

“And?” I asked.

“It was Victor.” He said and everything inside me went still.
