CHAPTER 194-1
Jace’s POV
I knew something was wrong the moment Derek walked into the clubhouse without his usual calm expression.
He closed the office door behind him and placed a folder on the desk.
“I found something.” Derek said as I looked at the folder.
“About Kyle?” I asked and Derek nodded.
“About Kyle.” Derek said.
Paige was still at Lawson Customs, and I had deliberately kept her out of the conversation because I didn’t want her worrying until we knew whether there was anything worth worrying about.
“What did you find?” I asked.
“His background mostly checks out, but there are gaps in his employment history.” He said as I opened the folder.
“How big are the gaps?” I asked.
“Some are only a few months, but there is one period that lasts almost a year.” Derek said as I studied the documents.
“What does he say he was doing?” I asked.
“He claims he was doing contract mechanic work.” Derek said.
“Can you verify it?” I asked.
“Not completely.” He said and I looked up.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“It means there are no clean records showing where he worked during that period, and one of the businesses he listed can’t be contacted.” Derek said as I leaned back in my chair.
“That sounds familiar.” I said as Derek nodded.
“It should, because it is the same business I mentioned to Paige.” Derek said.
“Redline Motor Works.” I said.
“Yes.” He said and I turned another page.
“Anything else?” I asked.
“His address history is clean enough, and his driver’s license is legitimate, but some of the older records are harder to verify than they should be.” He said.

CHAPTER 10t
“Gould there be an innocent explanation?” I asked.
“There could.” He said.
Derek never exaggerated anything, and that was one of the reasons trusted him.
“Then we don’t jump to conclusions.” I said.
“I agree.” He said.
The door opened, and Ethan walked inside carrying his laptop.
“I heard we had questions.” Ethan said.
“You found something too?” I asked.
“I did.” Ethan said.
He placed the laptop on the desk and pulled up a spreadsheet.

“I checked Kyle’s employment history against several databases and older business records.” Ethan said.
“And?” I asked.
“The timeline doesn’t line up perfectly.” Ethan said and Derek folded his arms.
“How bad?” Derek asked.
“Not bad enough to prove anything, but strange enough that I wouldn’t ignore it.” Ethan said as I looked at the screen and there were several dates highlighted.
“What am I looking at?” I asked.
“According to Kyle’s application, he worked at one shop until March, then started at another in April.” Ethan said.
“That sounds normal.” I said.
“It would be, except the second shop didn’t officially open until June.” Ethan said as I stared at the screen.
“You are sure?” I asked.
“I checked twice.” He said and Derek leaned closer.
“That means either his application contains an error, or he was working there before the company officially opened.” Derek said.
“Which is possible.” I said.
“It is possible. But there’s another problem.” Ethan agreed and I waited.
“The previous employer he listed for that period says Kyle worked there for nearly eight months, but their payroll records only show him for three.” Ethan added and I felt the room grow quieter.
