“How long do you think he has been gathering information?” I asked.

“We can’t know yet.” Derek said as Mia shook her head.

“I trusted him.” Mia said.

“So did I.” I said.

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Mia looked at me, and for a moment neither of us spoke.

I had been angry at Charlotte for years because she had betrayed me while pretending to be family.

“I want every account he could access checked.” I said and Derek nodded.

“Check the cameras too.” I said.

“We’re doing that.” He said as Jace placed a hand against my back.

“We will figure out what he took.” Jace said.

I nodded, but my attention remained fixed on the screen and I kept thinking about Ben. Kyle had been teaching him.

He had been standing beside him, offering advice, answering questions, and becoming someone Ben respected and the betrayal suddenly felt even uglier.

“Ben can’t know yet.” I said as Jace looked at me.

“Not until we understand what happened. I don’t want him blaming himself.” I added.

“He won’t.” Jace said.

“You don’t know that.” I said.

“I know Ben.” Jace said and I took a breath.

“Then we tell him carefully.” I said and Derek’s phone buzzed and he checked it.

“Kyle has not shown up this morning.” Derek said and I frowned.

“What time was he supposed to be here?” I asked.

“Seven.” He said and I looked at the clock.

“It’s almost ten.” I said.

“He hasn’t called Mia, and he hasn’t answered his phone.” Derek said.

That was enough to make my stomach tighten again.

“He knows we found out.” I said as Jace nodded.

“Maybe.” Jace said.

“Then he’s gone.” I said and Derek looked at the security footage.

“His truck isn’t at his house.” Derek said as I stared at him.

“You checked?” I asked.

“I checked.” He said and the room became silent.

Kyle had disappeared.

He hadn’t returned to work, and he hadn’t contacted anyone.

“How deep do you think he got into the business?” Mia asked as I looked around the security room.

“He knew employee schedules.” I said.

“He could have copied supplier information.” She said.

“He may have seen financial documents.” I said.

“You broke into my office.” I said.

“You lied to me.” I said.
