Sarah’s words stayed with me long after the phone call ended.

She wanted another private meeting, and judging by the seriousness in her voice, I knew this

wasn’t going to be another conversation about paperwork or evidence.

I looked toward Jace, who was standing near the office doorway and watching me carefully.

“What did she say?” Jace asked.

“She wants to meet tonight.” I said.

“Where?” He asked.

I gave him the location, and his expression immediately hardened.

“Why there?” He asked.

“I don’t know.” I said.

“Did she tell you what this is about?” He asked.

“No.” I said.

“Then I’m coming with you.” He said.

“She specifically asked for a private meeting.” I said.

“I don’t like it.” He said.

“Neither do I.” I said.

He stared at me for several seconds before nodding.

“Call me when you arrive.” He said.

“I will.” I said.

“And when you leave.” He said.

“I will.” I said as he stepped closer, and his hand settled against my waist.

“Paige.” He said.

“I know.” I said.

“Be careful.” He said.

“I’ll be careful.” I said and I kissed him quickly before grabbing my jacket.

The diner Sarah had chosen sat on the edge of town, and by the time I arrived, most of the

parking spaces were empty.

Sarah was already inside, sitting in a booth near the back, and when she saw me, she lifted

one hand.

I walked over and slid into the seat opposite her.

“You came.” She said.

“You asked me to.” I said and Sarah glanced toward the front windows before lowering her

voice.

“Victor is becoming increasingly reckless.” She said, and I frowned.

“More reckless than before?” I asked.

“Yes. The warehouse raid changed his situation.” She placed both hands on the table.

“I know.” I said.

“He lost a major supply centre, several people were arrested, and a significant amount of his

equipment was seized or destroyed.” She said.

“That should make him weaker.” I said.

“It has. But it has also made him more dangerous.” She said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because Victor is running out of options.” She said and my stomach tightened as Sarah

continued.

“Several confidential informants connected to investigations involving the Black Reapers have disappeared. They stopped answering calls, missed scheduled meetings, and in some

cases, their families haven’t heard from them either.” She said.

“Do you know what happened to them?” I asked.

“No, and we don’t have enough evidence to say Victor is responsible.” She said.

“But you suspect him.” I said.

“I suspect someone inside his organization is removing people who might know too much.”

“That’s terrifying.” I said.
