“What does that mean?” Derek asked.

“I don’t know.” Aaron said.

“You expect us to believe that two Black Reapers suddenly betrayed Victor without knowing

the plan?” Derek asked.

“We know enough to know we don’t want to be there when it happens.” Aaron said as he

shook his head and Cole appeared in the doorway.

“He’s telling the truth.” Cole said.

“Cole?” Aaron asked as he turned toward him.

“You called them too?” Cole asked.

“Yes.” Aaron said.

Neither man looked pleased to discover the other had defected, which actually made me trust them slightly more. If this had been staged, they would have known about each other.

“You both understand that you’re not walking away from here.” Derek said as he stepped

forward.

“I expected that.” Aaron said.

“You will remain under supervision, and every piece of information you provide will be

checked.” Derek said.

“We understand.” Aaron said.

“I will tell you anything I know.” Cole said.

“Good.” Aaron replied.

The door opened again, and Ethan entered carrying a laptop.

“I have something.” Ethan said as we turned toward him.

“I checked the names they gave us against known Black Reaper records.” He added.

“And?” I asked.

“They match.” He said and Ethan looked at Cole.

“Your name appears in three reports connected to Victor.” Ethan added and Cole nodded.

“I know.” Cole said.

“And Aaron appears in two.” Ethan said as Aaron looked relieved.

“That proves we were members.” Aaron said.

“It proves you existed. It doesn’t prove you’re telling the truth.” Ethan said and Aaron nodded.

“I understand.” Aaron said as Ethan turned the laptop around.

“I also found something else.” Ethan said.

On the screen was a photograph taken from an old police evidence file.

It showed a black symbol painted on a warehouse wall.

I stared at it and the same symbol had appeared in Uncle Will’s journals.

The same symbol had been connected to Charles Black and my pulse quickened.

“Where did that come from?” I asked.

“Old evidence from a warehouse investigation.” Ethan said and Cole stepped closer as his

face changed.

“You know that symbol?” I asked and everyone turned toward him as Cole stared at the

screen.

“I have seen that.” Cole said.

“Where?” I asked as he pointed at the image.

“Victor had that exact symbol in a file.” Cole said as I stepped closer.

“What file?” I asked as Cole swallowed.

“It wasn’t a Black Reapers file.” Cole said and my stomach tightened.

“Then whose was it?” I asked as Cole looked directly at me.

“Mr. Black.” Cole said and the room fell silent.
