“How long?” I asked.

“Two minutes.” He said.

“Then nobody chases them.” I said as Mason looked at me.

“They attacked us.” Mason said.

“I know.” I said.

“We could catch some of them.” Mason said.

“And then Victor gets exactly what he wants.” I said and Mason understood.

This wasn’t about chasing every Black Reaper rider through the county. It was about keeping

our people alive.

Another volley came from the far side of the property, but it was shorter and less organized.

Then the gunfire stopped.

The silence that followed felt almost unnatural so I waited but there was nothing so Derek

lifted his radio.

“North team, report.” Derek said.

“We have stopped firing.” Someone said.

“Any injuries?” Derek asked.

“None.” The guy said.

“Employees?” Derek asked.

“Safe.” The guy said.

I closed my eyes briefly.

That’s what mattered. The depot had been hit, but nobody had died and a siren sounded in

the distance.

Then another and the Black Reapers heard them too because engines started throughout the

surrounding roads.

“They’re leaving.” Mason said.

I watched several motorcycles disappear between the buildings and the remaining vehicles

followed, and within minutes, the road was empty.

Police cruisers arrived moments later, their lights washing over the damaged depot and

Sarah stepped out of the first vehicle and walked toward us.

“What happened?” Sarah asked.

“Black Reapers attacked the depot.” I said.

“How many?” She asked.

“Dozens across the area.” I said and she frowned.

“Did you engage?” She asked.

“They attacked first.” I said.

“That’s not what I asked.” She said.

“We defended the property.” I said and Sarah looked past me toward the damaged building.

“Anyone hurt?” She asked.

“No.” I said and her expression softened slightly.

“That’s good.” She said.

“It could have been worse.” I said.

She looked toward the road where the Black Reapers had disappeared.

“They planned this.” She said.

“I know.” I said.

“How long did you have warning?” She asked.

“Long enough to evacuate the employees.” I said and Sarah nodded.

“That probably saved lives.” She said as I looked at the depot.

Bullet holes covered the front wall, several windows were broken, and one truck had been

damaged by gunfire.

It was ugly, but it could be repaired.

People couldn’t and my radio suddenly crackled.

“Jace, this is Derek.” He said and I looked at the radio in my hand.

“You’re standing ten feet away from me.” I said.

“I know, but you need to hear this.” He said and I frowned.

“Go ahead.” I said.

“There are reports coming in from other areas.” He said.

“What kind of reports?” I asked.

“Possible Black Reaper attacks.” He said and my stomach tightened.

“Where?” I asked.

“I’m still confirming.” He said and Sarah heard him through the radio and stepped closer.

“Put it on speaker.” Sarah said so I did and Derek continued.

“First report came from the west side.” Derek said.

“What was hit?” I asked.

“A motorcycle repair shop.” I said as I looked at Sarah.

“Second?” She asked.

“A commercial storage yard.” Derek said.

“And the third?” She asked and there was a pause.

“A fuel station near the highway.” Derek said and Sarah’s expression changed.

“They’re spreading out.” Sarah said.

I looked toward the road. Victor hadn’t come here simply to attack one towing depot.

The depot had been the first strike. The rest of the town was next.

“How many units do you have available?” I asked Sarah.

“Not enough for three simultaneous scenes, especially if more reports come in.” She said.

“Then get whatever you can moving.” I said and she nodded and reached for her radio so I

turned toward Mason.
