Some wanted to keep fighting. Some wanted to run. Some wanted to make a deal. And some were probably already planning to betray me. So I pointed toward the door.
“If you don’t believe in me, leave.” I said.
For several seconds, I thought I had won when nobody moved. But then one rider stepped
backward.
“I’m leaving.” He said and my expression hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.” I said.
“Maybe.” He said as he removed his Black Reapers patch and placed it on the table.
“I’m tired of watching people die for a war that keeps getting worse.” He added.
Another rider followed. Then another and my chest tightened.
“You think you can simply walk away?” I asked and one of them looked at me.
“We’re already gone.” He said.
They walked out and the door closed behind them.”
Nobody stopped them.
That frightened me more than if someone had attacked and Damien watched the door.
“You should have listened.” Damien said as I turned toward him.
“You caused this.” I said.
“No. You caused this.” He said as he looked back at me and I stepped closer.
“You’re finished.” I said but Damien did not move.
“Then do what you have been threatening to do.” He said.
The room went silent again and I wanted to hit him. I wanted to end the argument permanently. But I knew what would happen if I did.
The remaining members would see exactly what Damien had been warning them about. They
would believe I had lost control.
So I stepped away.
“Get out.” I said as Damien stared at me.

“You want me gone?” Damien asked.
“Yes.” I said and he nodded slowly.

“I will leave.” He said as he turned toward the door and three riders followed him. Then two more.
I watched them disappear and the room that had been crowded only minutes earlier was suddenly half empty.
Nobody spoke and I looked at the remaining members.
“Anyone else?” I asked.
One rider looked toward the floor and another looked at the door. Finally, someone shook his head.
“No.” He said and I nodded.
“Then we continue.” I said.
But even as I said the words, I knew they sounded hollow.
The meeting ended shortly afterward and I remained alone in the room while the others scattered through the building.
I heard motorcycles starting outside.
One. Then another. Then another.
They were leaving and I walked toward the window.
Several bikes disappeared down the road.
They weren’t going to another Black Reaper location. They were leaving and I reached for my
phone.
No new messages. No calls. Nothing.
Then I noticed movement outside.
One of the younger riders was standing near the side entrance, speaking quietly into his phone.
He looked around before walking farther from the building and I watched him carefully.
He ended the call and returned inside.
“Who were you talking to?” I asked and he froze.
“Nobody.” He said as I stepped closer.
“You were talking to someone.” I said as he swallowed.
