Nobody had said it.

At least, not while she was close enough to hear and Derek stepped beside me.

“I didn’t say it.” Derek said as Mason shook his head.

“Neither did I.” Mason said as Sarah looked between us.

“I may have misunderstood.” She said.

“You may have.” I said and she gave me a careful look.

“Jace, you have bigger problems tonight than questioning me.” She said.

“Maybe.” I said and I kept my eyes on her.

“But I’m going to remember this conversation.” I added and Sarah’s expression changed for the

briefest moment.

Then she turned toward the injured patrol members.

“Get these men to the hospital.” She said.

The conversation was over. At least for now.

The Iron Vipers gathered the remaining motorcycles while police secured the road.

The Black Reapers were gone. Damien was gone. And somehow, Sarah had arrived almost

immediately.

I watched her speak with one of the officers, then look toward the woods again.

Something was wrong. I just didn’t know what and my phone vibrated.

I pulled it from my pocket.

Ethan.

“What have you got?” I answered and his voice was tense.

“We found something.” He said.

“Where?” I asked.

“At one of the Black Reaper safe houses.” He said as I glanced toward the trees.

“What did you find?” I asked.

“Evidence that Victor was there.” He said and my stomach tightened.

“Was?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said.

“When?” I asked.

“Recently.” He said and I looked toward Derek.

“Can you confirm he is gone?” I asked and Ethan hesitated.

“That’s the problem.” Ethan said.

“What problem?” I asked.

“The place was cleared before we arrived.” He said and I stared at the road.

“Cleared how?” I asked.

“Everything important was removed. Vehicles, computers, records, even personal belongings.” He

said.

“Who found it?” I asked.

“Tyler gave us the location.” He said and I clenched my jaw.

“Then Victor knew we had the maps.” I said and Ethan went quiet.

I understood immediately. Someone had warned him. Someone had told Victor that the Iron

Vipers were closing in.

I looked toward Sarah and she was standing alone beside her cruiser.

For one second, our eyes met. Then she looked away as my phone remained against my ear.

“Ethan.” I said.

“Yes?” He asked.

“Find every location Victor has used in the last month.” I said.

“I will.” He said.

“And find out when he left this one.” I said.

“I’m already checking.” He said.

A few seconds passed and then Ethan’s voice came through again.

“Jace, there’s something else.” Ethan said.
