trying to figure out what we can make for dinner.” He said.
“You’re the club president.” I said.
“I know.” He said.
“You have people who handle difficult situations.” I said.
“I know.” He said.
“And you can’t figure out dinner.” I said and he looked offended.
“Dinner is complicated.” He said and I laughed.
“You’re ridiculous.” I said.
“I’m exhausted.” He said.
“So am I.” I said and he closed the refrigerator.
“Then we make something easy.” He said.
“Agreed.” I said.
We settled on pasta because neither of us had the energy to be creative.
I chopped vegetables while Jace handled the sauce, and for once there were no phones ringing, no
club members coming through the door, and no one asking us where Victor was.
The silence was almost therapeutic and Jace glanced at me.
“You know what I like about this place?” Jace asked.
“That you can’t escape the smell of motorcycles?” I asked and he smiled.
“That too.” He said as he stirred the sauce.
“I like that nobody knows we’re here unless we tell them.” He added and I looked at him.
“That’s probably why I like it too.” I said and he nodded.
For several minutes, we simply cooked and then Jace spoke.
“I don’t trust Sarah.” He said as I stopped chopping.
“I know.” I said as he looked at me.
“You knew?” He asked.

“Jace, I have been suspicious of Sarah for a while.” I said and he leaned against the counter.
“How long?” He asked.
“Since she started helping us.” I said and his eyebrows lifted.
“That long?” He asked and I nodded.
“She’s a cop.” I said.
“I know.” He said.
“She has repeatedly helped a motorcycle club that has been involved in enough trouble to make most officers keep their distance.” I said as Jace nodded slowly.
“Exactly.” He said.
“I’m not saying she’s corrupt.” I said.
“Neither am I.” He said.
“But something is strange.” I said.
“Very strange.” He said as I finished chopping and placed the knife down.
“No police officer willingly puts themselves this close to a club like ours without a reason.” I said
and Jace studied me.
“You really have been thinking about this.” He said.
“I own a business connected to the Iron Vipers, I live with the president, and half the people trying
to hurt us seem to know more about our movements than they should.” I said and I gave him a
pointed look.
“I pay attention.” I added and he smiled.
“I’m beginning to realize that.” He said.
“You’re only beginning?” I asked.
“I’m a little slow.” He said and I laughed and then his expression became serious again.
“Last night she knew Damien was there before anyone told her.” He added.
“I heard.” I said.
“And she knew about the underground facility before we told her.” He said.
“I remember.” I said.
