Diesel reached the bottom of the stairs before Jace and me, and his barking echoed through the

closed garage.

I gripped the railing as I followed Jace down.

The workshop was dark except for the security lights near the office, and nothing appeared out of place at first.

Diesel stood near the rear entrance, his body rigid, his attention fixed on the closed door and Jace

raised his weapon.

“Stay behind me.” Jace said.

“I am staying close.” I said and he glanced back at me.

“That’s not what I said.” He said.

“I know.” I said and he sighed.

“You’re impossible.” He said.

“I’ve heard that before.” I said and Diesel barked again.

Jace moved toward the door and stopped several feet away.

“Who is there?” Jace asked.

For several seconds, there was no answer. Then someone spoke from the other side.

“I need help.” He said and Jace looked at me.

The voice sounded male, and it carried exhaustion rather than aggression.

“Step away from the door.” Jace ordered.

“I already did.” He said.

“Put your hands where I can see them when you come inside.” Jace said.

There was a pause and then the lock clicked and Jace opened the door quickly.

A man stood outside with his hands raised.

He looked exhausted, dirty, and nervous, and his black jacket had once carried a Black Reapers

patch.

Now the patch had been cut away and Jace immediately raised his weapon.

“Who are you?” Jace asked.

“My name is Ryan Cole.” He said and Jace’s expression hardened.

“Another Black Reaper.” Jace said.

“I used to be.” Ryan said as I studied him.

He looked younger than I expected, perhaps late twenties, and there was fear in his eyes that didn’t

look manufactured.

“Why are you here?” Jace asked.

“I was told the Iron Vipers were protecting people who left Victor.” He said.

“Who told you?” Jace asked.

“Nobody.” He said as Ryan swallowed.

“I heard about Cole and Aaron, and then Tyler.” He added and Jace didn’t lower his weapon.

“How did you find this place?” Jace asked.

“I followed one of your riders.” Ryan said and I frowned.

“That was stupid.” I said.

“I know.” He said as Jace looked toward the garage entrance.

“Did anyone follow you?” Jace asked.

“No.” Ryan said.

“You are certain?” Jace asked.

“Yes.” Ryan said as he hesitated.

“Victor doesn’t know I’m here.” He added and Jace studied him.

“That makes one of us.” Jace said as Ryan looked confused.

“What does that mean?” Ryan asked.

“It means we’re not trusting you yet.” Jace said and Ryan nodded.

“I understand.” Ryan said and Jace lowered his weapon slightly.

“Come inside.” Jace said as Ryan stepped into the garage.

Diesel immediately approached him and sniffed his jacket and Ryan froze.
