He could have.” I said as I looked toward the eastern gate.

“Or he’s waiting.” I said.

We moved forward carefully.

The front door was unlocked and inside, we found empty crates, discarded clothing, and several maps spread across a table so Ethan picked one up.

“These were used recently.” Ethan said.

“How recently?” I asked.

“Within hours.” Ethan said and Tyler moved toward the back room.

“There is an office.” Tyler said so we followed him.

A chair sat behind the desk, and a half-empty bottle of water rested beside a pile of papers and I

touched nothing.

“Someone was here.” I said and Ethan nodded.

“Very recently.” Ethan said.

Then I heard an engine.

I turned and a black SUV exploded out of the eastern gate.

“Victor!” I yelled and we ran outside.

Derek’s vehicle appeared from the opposite road, but the SUV had already reached the highway.

Mason tried to cut it off, but Victor swerved around him and disappeared into traffic.

I stood beside the road, staring after him.

He had been waiting. He had known we were coming. He had waited until the last possible second before escaping and Derek climbed out of his vehicle.

“He knew.” Derek said.

“Yes.” I said as Mason looked toward the property.

“Someone warned him.” Mason said but I didn’t answer.

I already knew what I was thinking. Sarah had given us the location. Sarah had known where Victor

was. Sarah had arrived at the roadside ambush almost immediately and Sarah had known Damien

was there before anyone had identified him.

And now Victor had escaped seconds before we reached him so I looked at Ethan.

“Call Sarah.” I said so he did and she answered almost immediately.

“What happened?” Sarah asked.

“Victor escaped.” I said and there was a pause.

“When?” She asked.

“Seconds ago.” I said.

“I thought you were still approaching.” She said and I felt my jaw tighten.

“How did you know we hadn’t reached the property?” I asked and there was another pause.

“I assumed.” She said.

“No.” I said as my voice hardened.

“You knew.” I said and Sarah was silent.

“I am trying to help you.” She said.

“Then start telling us everything.” I said.

“I have told you everything I can.” She said.

“That’s the problem.” I said and I ended the call and Derek looked at me.

“You think she warned him.” Derek said.

“I think someone warned him.” I said.

“You think it was Sarah.” He said.

“I think she’s the most obvious possibility.” I said and Ethan looked toward the property.

“Then we need to find out whether she’s working alone.” Ethan said.

Before I could answer, movement appeared on the northern road.

Three motorcycles approached slowly and Derek raised his weapon.

“Black Reapers.” Derek said and I lifted a hand.

“Don’t fire.” I said.

The riders stopped and all three raised their hands.
