Victor blamed him for everything.” He said.

“Everything?” I asked.

“Every loss, every failed attack, every missing shipment, and every person who walked away.” He

said as another rider spoke.

“Victor said Damien was the reason he kept losing.” The second one said and I shook my head.

“Damien was following Victor’s orders.” The first one said.

“We know.” I said as the first rider looked exhausted.

“That’s why we left.” He said and more motorcycles appeared.

Two more riders stopped and surrendered. Then another.

Within minutes, several former Black Reapers were standing beside the road with their weapons

secured.

Victor was losing people faster than he could replace them.

His money was disappearing. His operations were collapsing. His remaining followers were

surrendering.

He was almost alone.

That should have made me feel better. Instead, it made me more nervous.

A desperate man with nothing left to lose was more dangerous than a man who still had

something worth protecting.

My phone vibrated and it was an unknown number.

I stared at it and Derek noticed.

“Answer it.” Derek said so I accepted the call.

“Jace speaking.” I said.

For several seconds, there was nothing except breathing. Then a familiar voice came through.

“You need to listen to me.” Damien said and my entire body went still.

“Damien.” I said.

“Yes.” He said and Derek’s expression changed so I stepped away from the others.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“can’t tell you.” He said.

“Then why are you calling?” I asked.

“Because Victor is going to make a move.” He said.

“What move?” I asked.

“I don’t know everything.” He said.

“Then tell me what you know.” I said and Damien breathed heavily.

“Victor is finished.” He said.

“I know.” I said.

“No, Jace.” He said as his voice sounded strained.

“You don’t understand.” He said as I looked toward the road.

“What am I missing?” I asked.

went cold.

“Who?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” He said.

“Then why call me?” I asked.

“Because I know who Victor trusts.” He said and I glanced toward Ethan.

“Who?” I asked and Damien hesitated.

Then he said the words that made my stomach drop.

“The person protecting Victor is not one of the Black Reapers.” He said and I tightened my grip

around the phone.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“I can’t say over the phone.” He said.

“Then meet me.” I said.

“I will.” He said.

“When?” I asked.

“Damien?” I asked.

No answer. The call had ended and I stared at the screen and Derek walked toward me.
