CHAPTER 241-1
Victor disappeared into the darkness, and I followed.
Derek was directly behind me, while Blake moved along the opposite side of the tunnel with his weapon raised.
The quarry seemed to swallow every sound, and the deeper we went, the colder the air became.
“Victor!” I shouted.
My voice echoed through the tunnels. There was no answer and Derek looked at me.
“He knows these tunnels.” Derek said.
“I know.” I said.
“He could be anywhere.” Derek said.
“Then we keep moving.” I said as Blake pointed toward the ground.
“Tracks.” Blake said and I crouched.
There were fresh footprints in the dust.
Victor was moving quickly, and judging by the depth of the impressions, he was carrying
something heavy.
“Keep going.” I said.
We followed the tracks around a narrow bend, but they suddenly disappeared and Derek frowned.
“He doubled back.” Derek said and I looked at the walls.
“No.” I said as Blake pointed toward a narrow opening.
“There.” Blake said.
The opening was almost hidden behind several broken pieces of timber and Victor had found
another passage.
We squeezed through and the tunnel narrowed until we had to move sideways, and the sound of our boots seemed unnaturally loud.
Then we heard something. A metal door slammed somewhere ahead.
“He’s running.” Derek said.
“Then run faster.” I said and we pushed forward.

Outside the quarry, the Iron Vipers had secured the main exits, but Victor had planned his escape
routes too carefully.
Every tunnel seemed to lead somewhere else. Every turn offered another possibility.
He had spent years using this place. We were chasing him through his own maze and my radio
crackled.
“Mason to Jace.” Mason said and I answered.
“Go.” I said.
“The western exit is secure, but we found another tunnel entrance.” He said.
“Keep it covered.” I said.
“Understood.” He said as Derek looked at me.
“How many exits does this place have?” Derek asked.
“Too many.” I said as Blake moved ahead.
“I hear something.” Blake said and we stopped.
A faint scraping sound came from somewhere ahead. Then a gunshot echoed through the tunnel.
“Down!” I yelled.
The bullet struck the stone wall and we dropped behind cover as Victor fired again.
“He’s ahead!” I said as Derek returned fire.
Victor disappeared around the corner and we moved forward carefully.
“Don’t chase blindly.” Derek warned.
“know.” I said.
However, Victor was running out of tunnel.
We could feel it and the passages were becoming narrower, and the air smelled stale.
He was heading toward the older section of the quarry and I checked my phone.
No signal.
That worried me and then my radio crackled again.
“Jace.” Mason said.
“What?” I asked.

“Sarah has been giving police roadblocks.” Mason said and I frowned.
“Where?” I asked.
