CHAPTER 244-1
The folder felt heavier than it should have and Charles stood in front of me while the celebration continued behind us, and although laughter still carried from the clubhouse, the moment between us felt strangely separate from everything happening around us.
Jace stood beside me, watching my father carefully.
“What is inside?” I asked as Charles looked down at the folder.
“Something that belongs to you.” Charles said and I frowned.
“You said there was something connected to Michael Reeves.” I said.
“I thought there was.” He said.
He opened the folder and pulled out several documents.
I recognized the official formatting immediately.
“Those are property documents.” I said and Charles nodded.
I took them from him and the first page contained a legal description of a parcel of land.
I read it once. Then again and my heart started beating faster.
“This is the land behind Lawson Customs.” I said.
“Yes.” Charles said as I looked at him.
“The vacant property?” I asked.
“Yes.” He said as I stared at the documents.
The land behind the garage had been empty for years, and I had mentioned it more than once Because the workshop had become cramped since the business expanded.
I had dreamed about buying it. I had even checked the property listings several months ago.
However, the price had always been too high.
“You bought this?” I asked and Charles nodded.
“When?” I asked.
“Several months ago.” He said and I looked at him in disbelief.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I knew you needed the space.” He said and I looked back at the documents.

“You bought it without telling me?” I asked.
“Yes.” He said.
“Why?” I asked as Charles took a breath.

“Because I didn’t know whether you would ever want anything from me again.” He said and that answer hurt more than I expected and I looked at him.
“So you bought land instead?” I asked and a small smile touched his face.
“I suppose that sounds ridiculous.” He said.
“It does.” I said.
“I know.” He said as he glanced toward Lawson Customs.
“I watched the business grow.” He said as his voice became quieter.
“I saw how hard you worked, and I saw how much you cared about that place.” He added as I
looked down at the deed.
“I wanted to help.” He said.
“You could have told me.” I said.
“I could have.” He said.
“Why didn’t you?” I asked.
“Because I didn’t want to make it about me.” He said and I looked at him as Charles continued.
“I spent years making everything about what I thought was best for this family.” He said as his eyes dropped.
“I made decisions for you, ignored you when you needed me, and believed things because they
were easier for me to believe.” He added and I swallowed.
“I know.” I said.
“I can’t change that.” He said.
“No.” I said.
“I can’t give you back the years I wasted.” He said.
“No.” I said and he nodded.
“So I wanted to give you something that could actually help you now.” He said and I looked toward the property behind the garage.
