For years, Lawson Customs had been my dream. It had started with Uncle Will.

Now, somehow, we had done it and Ben stepped forward.

“You believed in me when I was still an apprentice.” He said as I looked at him.

“You earned your place.” I said.

“You gave me a chance.” He said and Aiden nodded.

“You gave me one too.” Aiden said as Mia smiled.

“You gave all of us a place.” Mia said and my throat tightened.

“I couldn’t have done it without you.” I said as Ben shook his head.

“You started it.” Ben said.

“We just helped you build it.” Mia added and Aiden smiled.

“And we’re not finished.” Aiden said as I laughed through my tears.

“No, we’re not.” I said.

Everyone applauded and someone opened a bottle of sparkling cider.

Children cheered and Emma came into the office and hugged me.

“I’m so proud of you.” She said as I hugged her back.

“Thank you.” I said as she looked at the award.

“Uncle Will would be proud too.” She said.

That nearly broke me as I nodded.

“I know.” I said.

The celebration moved into the workshop, where everyone gathered around tables covered with

food.

Jace eventually returned and he walked toward me with a curious expression.

“What happened?” He asked as I held up the award.

“We won.” I said.

He stared at it and then he smiled.

“I knew you would.” He said.

“You knew?” I asked.

“I’ve known for years.” He said as he wrapped his arms around me.

“I’m proud of you.” He added as I rested my cheek against his chest.

“I have something else to tell you.” I said and he looked down.

“What?” He asked.

I opened my mouth and then Mason shouted from across the workshop.

“Jace!” Mason yelled out and Jace sighed so I laughed.

“You should go.” I said.

“I swear everyone has terrible timing.” He said.

“I know.” I said and he kissed me.

“I will come back.” He said.

He walked away and Charlotte appeared beside me.

“You really need to tell him.” She said.

“I’m trying.” I said and she laughed.

“I can see that.” She said.

Eventually, the crowd settled down.

The award was placed on the main counter, and everyone returned to work or conversation.

I carried the certificate into Uncle Will’s old office.

“We did it.” I said as my voice cracked.

“You were right. We really did it.” I said and I smiled through the tears and I stepped back.

The award looked perfect beside his photograph. Then Jace appeared in the doorway

“You disappeared again.” He said and I turned.

“I was putting something away.” I said.

He walked inside and he looked at the award.

“That’s a good place for it.” He said.

“I thought so.” I said as he stood beside me.

“You really are happy.” He said.

“I am.” I said as he looked at me.

“Good.” He said and I reached for his hand.

“Jace.” I said and he smiled.

“What?” He asked.

“I need to tell you something.” I said and he squeezed my fingers.

“Tell me.” He said as I took a breath.

Then the office door opened and Derek appeared.

“Sorry.” Derek said as Jace closed his eyes.

“What now?” Jace asked and Derek looked embarrassed.

“The police commissioner wants to speak with you.” Derek said as Jace sighed.

“I’ll be right there.” Jace said and Derek left as I stared at him.

“This is getting ridiculous.” I said and he laughed.

“I agree.” He said as he kissed my forehead.

“I’ll be back.” I said.

He walked away and I looked down at my stomach.
