CHAPTER 248-1

The ride through the countryside continued for another twenty minutes before I finally realized we weren’t heading back toward the clubhouse.

I tightened my arms around Jace’s waist as he turned onto a narrow road surrounded by trees.

“Jace, where are we going?” I asked and he glanced back briefly.

“You’ll see.” He said.

“You’ve said that twice now.” I said.

“And you’re still asking.” He said.

“Because you’re being suspicious.” I said.

“I’m not being suspicious.” He said.

“You’re absolutely being suspicious.” I said and I felt him laugh beneath me.

“Just trust me.” He said and I rested my cheek against his back.

“I do trust you, but that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy being kept in the dark.” I said.

“You’ll understand when we get there.” He said and I sighed dramatically.

“You’d better hope I like wherever we’re going.” I said.

“I think you will.” He said.

A few minutes later, the trees opened up, revealing an old gravel road that disappeared behind a row of overgrown bushes.

Jace slowed the motorcycle and turned down the road.

I stared ahead and something about the place felt familiar, although I couldn’t immediately explain

why.

Then I saw the building. It was an old workshop, partly hidden beneath the trees, with faded paint, a rusted metal roof, and large garage doors that had clearly seen better days. My heart stopped.

“Jace.” I said as he pulled the motorcycle to a stop and I climbed off slowly and stared at the

building.

“I know this place.” I said as Jace removed his helmet.

“Do you?” He asked.

CHAPTER 248-1

“I’ve seen pictures of it.” I said and he nodded.

“Uncle Will worked here when he was young.” He said and I looked at him.

“You knew?” I asked.

“I found out while I was going through some of the old information.” He said.

My eyes returned to the building and Uncle Will had worked here.

Before Lawson Customs. Before the business. Before I was old enough to understand what he was doing with his life.

I walked toward the workshop and the old sign above the entrance was barely readable, but the

name was still there.

MILLER’S GARAGE.

“How did you find this place?” I asked.

“I asked around.” He said.

“You’ve been keeping secrets.” I said and he smiled.

“I wanted today to be about you.” He said and I turned toward him.

“You really planned all of this?” I asked.

“I wanted to show you something that belonged to Will.” He said.

I looked at the building again, and my chest tightened.

“Why didn’t anybody ever tell me about this place?” I asked.

“Maybe nobody thought to.” He said and a voice came from behind us.

“Or maybe they didn’t know what it meant.” THe man said so I turned around.

An older man stood beside a pickup truck parked near the building.

His gray hair was covered by a worn baseball cap, and his hands were stained with grease despite the fact that he wasn’t working on anything.

“George?” I asked and he smiled.

“That’s me.” He said and I looked at Jace.

“You knew he was going to be here?” I asked.

“I did.” Jace said and George chuckled.
