Pe looked at Emma, Sophia, and Mia. Then he looked at Ben. Then he looked back at me.

“I can’t do that.” He said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I have absolutely no idea what any of this means.” He said and Ben nodded.

“He’s right.” Ben said as Jace pointed at him.

“See?” Jace asked and then he walked back out and I shook my head.

“Unbelievable.” I said as Emma smiled.

“He’s smart.” Emma said.

“He abandoned me.” I said.

“He knows when to retreat.” Emma said.

By late afternoon, I was completely exhausted and I dropped my pen onto the desk.

“I can’t do this anymore.” I said and Emma immediately softened.

“Okay.” She said as Sophia closed her tablet.

“We’ve been going too far.” Sophia said and Mia nodded.

“We can simplify it.” Mia said and I looked at them.

“I don’t care about having the perfect shower.” I said.

“We know.” She said.

“I just want the people I love there.” I said and Emma smiled.

“Then that’s what we’ll do.” Emma said.

“And cake.” I said making Sophia laugh.

“Definitely cake.” Sophia said.

“And maybe some motorcycles.” I said and Mia grinned.

“We can arrange that.” Mia said and Ben lifted his hand.

“I volunteer an actual motorcycle.” Ben said.

“No.” Emma said immediately and everyone laughed and the tension finally disappeared.

By evening, we had settled on something simple.

Good food. Family. Friends. Fairy lights. A few motorcycle decorations. And enough cake to feed everyone twice.

I was standing outside the workshop when Jace came over and wrapped his arms around me.

“How did it go?” He asked.

“I survived.” I said.

“That’s good.” He said.

“I think Emma almost killed Ben over flowers.” I said.

“I believe it.” He said as Ben walked past us carrying his toolbox.

“I stand by what I said.” Ben said and Jace looked at him.

“What did you say?” Jace asked.

“Fixing engines is easier than choosing flowers.” Ben said and Jace nodded.

“He’s right.” Jace said and I laughed.

Then headlights appeared in the parking lot.

A familiar vehicle pulled in, and my smile faded slightly when I saw my father step out. Charles closed the door and walked toward us.

“Am I interrupting?” He asked.

“No. Come over.” I said.

He approached slowly, and I noticed he seemed nervous. Jace noticed it too.

“Everything okay?” Jace asked and Charles nodded.

“Everything’s fine.” He said and he looked at me.

“I actually came because I wanted to ask you something.” Charles said and I frowned.

“What is it?” I asked and he took a breath.

“I’ve been thinking about everything that has happened.” He said and I waited.

“I know I can’t change the past, and I know there are things I’ll probably spend the rest of my life wishing I’d done differently.” He said as my chest tightened.

“Dad.” I said and he smiled sadly.
