The Truth

ARABELLA’S POV

ཁ་

Everything went eerily still, my heart nearly halting in its frantic rhythm as my trembling legs went numb. I couldn’t move. nor could I speak, as I stared at him, the impatience burning in his eyes only heightening my panic.

He knew… But how?

“Arabella.” Alvise’s voice was a harsh command. “I asked you a question.”

I didn’t know what to say… Or do. I opened my mouth, but not even a whisper came out. I tried again, forcing the words out. “W… What… Do… You… Mean?” I stuttered, my lips quivering with every word.

His eyes darkened, his hand resting on the table balling into a fist. “Who the fuck laid their hands on you?” he snapped.

I cleared my throat, clutching my chest to soothe the ache spreading through it. “No one… no one hit me, Alvise,” I forced out a weak chuckle. “What are you talking about?”

Alvise was out of his chair before I could blink. He rounded the table until he was standing beside me. A shocked gasp escaped my lips as he spun the chair until I was facing him, then leaned over until he was hovering above me. “I told you no to fucking lie to me. So don’t.”

“Alvise… I’m…” My words failed me, my nerves fraying with every second his intense eyes bored into mine. “Not… lying.”

I couldn’t tell him the truth. I could never. Francesca would ruin my life… Our lives, and I couldn’t let that happen. It was my mistake. My decision. I shouldn’t let everyone else suffer because of it.

He grabbed my chin, his grip firm as he leaned closer until I could make out every sharp line of his face. “Why do you think you can look me in the eye and lie to my face?”

My stomach sank, and my legs bounced together. “Nobody…”

“Archie made breakfast this morning before he left for work,” Alvise snapped, cutting me off.

My brows drew together as I squinted at him, trying to make sense of his words. “I don’t understand…”
