Drop It…

ARABELLA’S POV

It wasn’t intentional, but for some reason, I kept getting flustered whenever the man in front of me called me baby.

I didn’t know if it was his accent or just his voice overall, but there was something about the way he said it that made my stomach flutter with something dangerously close to butterflies.

“Are you ready?” Alvise asked, pulling me out of my thoughts and dragging my gaze back to him.

“Yes,” I said, sidestepping him and walking to the closet. “Let me just put my shoes on.”

I slipped on a pair of black kitten heels, grabbed a shoulder bag even though I had nothing to put inside it. and sprayed on his cologne.

Alvise was leaning against the door with his hands slipped into his pockets and his ankles crossed when I returned to the room.

“I’m ready now,” I mumbled, walking towards him. “And by the way, I’m wearing your cologne… because I wear it better.”

He pushed off the wall and stroked his chin. “I agree.”

I held back my smile and bit my lip, walking out of the room after Alvise opened the door.

The guards outside bowed to greet us as we walked past them, and all I could do was nod, unsure of what

to say.

As we descended the stairs side by side, I played with my fingers awkwardly, thinking of what to say to start

a conversation.

I cleared my throat, looking at him. “Are you taking me shopping?”

Alvise glanced at me, his blue eyes piercing. “Do you want to go shopping?”

I shrugged. “I do. But it’s mainly because I get bored sometimes.”

We reached the front door, and he opened it for me, muttering, “How will shopping stop you from getting bored, Arabella?”

“Well, I can always just look at the clothes, and it will brighten my mood.”

Alvise gave me a blank look, but he nodded and walked ahead of me to the garage. “I’ll take you on our way back.”

I smiled, excited for the retail therapy.

It was going to be more fun because I would be spending his money, not mine.

I waited for Alvise to drive his car to the middle of the property and for his guards to drive theirs to the front and back of his before I approached the car and got in.

Turned to look at me, his eyes pulling me in, but I refused to get overwhelmed.

“I have something to ask you,” I said slowly. “Promise me you won’t get upset?”

His jaw hardened, like he already knew what I wanted to ask without me even saying it.

“I’m listening.”

“Are you… going to hurt William…?”

“Drop it.”

I sighed in disappointment, leaning back against the seat and puffing out a frustrated breath.

I hated making things awkward between us, but William was still locked up somewhere, and it killed me to have no idea what was happening to him.

Wordlessly, Alvise started the car, and after the cars in front of us drove through the opened gates, he followed suit.

As we drove onto the large private road, I could sense that there was a change in the air.

He hated me speaking about William, and I hated it every time he shut my questions down.

It was like a never-ending cycle.

We spent the rest of the drive not saying a word to each other, and eventually, the car pulled to a stop in front of a restaurant.

I furrowed my brows, turning to Alvise, but before I could say anything, he unlocked the door and stepped out of the car.

“That was fast,” I mumbled under my breath, settling back into the seat.

My door opened seconds later, and I turned to see Alvise watching me. “Come out of the car, Arabella.”

Grabbing my bag, I stepped out and shut the door.

I shuddered the moment the cool breeze hit me hard, goosebumps rising on my skin.

I really should have brought a jacket.

Eager to get inside and shake off the cold, I walked ahead of Alvise, heading toward the entrance of the restaurant, but he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back until I was flush against his chest.

My heartbeat picked up as he brought his lips to my ear. “You’re cold.”

“I know,” I whispered, resting my head on his shoulder so I could peek at him.

“So you want to be stubborn?”

“How? What did I do?”
