Ruined By My Brother’s Best Friend
Dread and Worry
ARABELLA’S POV
There was a certain presence…. Somehow overwhelming and intimidating that he held. It was so persistent that whenever you found yourself in his vicinity, you get so consumed that at some point, you forget how to act. I’d always been aware of how he affected me… But now, as I trailed behind while we walked towards the exit of the restaurant, I got to see that it wasn’t peculiar to only me.
People moved out of the way to give him space, like they felt like their mere existence caused him irritation. It probably did…. So did mine. I managed to keep up with his long confident strides as we finally walked out of the restaurant and headed towards his car.
It was silent. Eerily silent and the only source of sound was his footfall as he rounded the car, unlocked and got inside. didn’t wait for an invitation before sliding into the passenger seat and fastening my seatbelt. He started the engine soon after and then drove off.
Exhausted, I leaned back into the seat and closed my eyes, marvelling at the fresh breeze that flowed into the car from the little opening of the windows. It had been a long day and I was tired. So tired that I wanted nothing more than to crawl under my covers and have the longest sleep known to man.
The car suddenly pulled to a stop, prompting me to snap my eyes open. With raised brows, I sat up and glanced around, frowning when I realised we weren’t in front of my apartment but a huge building that looked dated and unused from the outside.
I turned to Alvise, “where are we?” I asked, the tiredness slowly leaving me.
He ignored me and reached his hand to the backseat before grabbing a boxed package and a leather bag. I watched as he pulled out his phone, stroked his chin then typed out something. He took his time and when he finally deemed me worthy of his attention, he merely shot out an order, “Do not get out of the car.” And then he pushed the door open and stepped out with the box and leather bag.
Once out of the car, Alvise’s eyes met mine, “Lock the car from the inside. Now.” His tone was firm and cold, and the intensity in it made me weary.
Suddenly alarmed, I pushed the button that had all the doors lock instantly. Alvise waited and only left once he was sure I’d locked it. A sudden discomfort crept up and settled in my stomach as I watched him walk towards the abandoned house.
Dread and worry settled in me the moment I couldn’t see his his retreating form anymore. He had gone inside… Why? 1 gripped the seatbelt, my hands trailing down the sides as I tried to calm myself down.
Alvise didn’t acknowledge my question. Wordlessly, he turned on the engine and then drove out of the area. I didn’t want him to juat push aside the question so I tried again, “Why did we stop there?”
A muscle in his jaw ticked and his hands on the steering wheel tightened like he was trying to control himself from snapping at me. I frowned, genuinely confused by his reaction and behaviour, I only asked a question. There was no need for him to get annoyed.
After a few more tense seconds, I turned away from him and leaned back into the seats, I was too tired to wait around for him to offer me crumbs of his attention. A few minutes passed and I was about dozing off, but the car came to a stop again. This time, when I opened my eyes, we were in front of my apartment.
With a sudden urgency to get away from him, I undid my seatbelt and stepped out of the car. I turned around to leave before his cool voice stopped me, “Arabella?”
Huffing out a breath and furrowing my brows, I turned around to look at him. His intense eyes held mine for some seconds. the air tense and my mind a messy haze of anticipation as I waited patiently for him to speak, only to be disappointed when he finally did.
He gripped the steering wheel and started the engine, before speaking in his usual stern cold tone, “You don’t get to ask me questions.”
