“Oh,” I said. “Sorry about that. I was in a rush to get to work.”

Alvise poked the inside of his cheek with his tongue. “Why are you still here? I dropped you off early.”

I was at a loss for words, and I shifted my weight onto one foot. His eyes tracked the movement, making my stomach sink. He watched every single thing I did with such rapt attention that I feared he could see straight through every lie I told.

I cleared my throat. “Umm… I had to make breakfast first, but I ended up running late, so I left it halfway.” I blurted, avoiding eye contact.

To change the subject, I asked, “What about you? What brings you here?”

Alvise pushed himself off the wall and stroked his chin. “Your brother,” he said before pressing the elevator button, the doors sliding open.

My brows knitted together as I followed him inside. “What about him?”

“He forgot the files for his meeting,” Alvise said, sounding irritated by the thought alone.

The doors closed, and he pressed the button for the first floor. I frowned. “Oh, so you came to help him get them? That’s so nice of you.”

Alvise raised a brow. “Some of my work documents are in those files too,” he clarified.

I shrugged. “Same thing… but wait, why didn’t you go in and get the files? Why are you leaving?”

“He texted me to say he’d already printed new copies and sent them to my office,” he replied.

“Oh,” I murmured, lowering my gaze to the floor.

“Now,” Alvise said, making me look up at him, “what the fuck is going on?”
