Chapter 18: Darkness
Dante’s pov
“Just because you spotted me doesn’t mean anything.” A voice that doesn’t belong to Ben
said.
Should I even say a voice? It sounded more like different voices at the same time. One voice was just louder than the others. Also felt and sounded like his voice was echoing.
Jade got up, and I watched as she walked towards him with no fear in her eyes.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, whatever that was.
“Why should I tell you?” He asked with a smirk.
“I guess it’s my fault for asking so nicely,” Jade said, and I watched as she took a butter knife. She started chanting a few words, and I watched as a butter knife turned into a massive glowing sword.
I watched as she played with it in her hands like she was playing some trick.
The sword was glowing yellow and it suddenly turned green. She stabbed him in the same injured shoulder and he started screaming in pain.
“I asked you a question, what are you doing here?” She asked him.
“I am a spy,” He answered.
“Who are you here to spy on?” She asked him.
“I was told to report to a number, I don’t know who I am reporting to.” He answered.
“Do
you
know who summoned you back to the living?” She asked whatever that was.
“No, by the time I came to, I was in this man’s body. I got a call that gave me instructions, I was promised that this man’s body will then belong to me.” He answered, and I frowned at this.
What the hell is happening here?
What is that, and why is it inside Ben’s body?
“Please don’t kill me.” Ben added.
“What the hell is going on here?” My mother asked.

Jade sighed as she took out the sword that was on Ben’s shoulder. She then turned around and then looked at us ready to explain. Ben suddenly turned to run but didn’t go anywhere because something pulled him back and slammed him against the wall.
“You have been marked, once this sword marks you, then you can’t run.” she said as she sat
back down.
“You man has been possessed by an evil spirit. Evil spirits are the souls of witches who believe that they have been wronged. You can summon them and they can possess a person’s body.” She explained and then sighed, looking at her sister. It was like she was already tired of talking and didn’t want to talk any further.
“They can be used for all types of things. They were used to assassinations and also for spying.” Sasha took over. “They can put an evil spirit in the body of someone a King or Queen trusts and then use them to kill them. The person has no idea that they have that thing inside them.”
“What? And Ben had that, but how is it that only she managed to see it? Why didn’t you?” Olivia asked Sasha with a frown.
“The spirit seems to have linked up with his body, so it is hard for me to detect.” Sasha
answered.
“Linked up?” Alec asked, sounding just as confused as I was.
“It’s the same with the mate bond, two people who have been bonded together for 10 years and two people who just bonded a few weeks ago. The ones who have been bonded longer will have a much better bond or a stronger one.” Jade took over again.
“But it also depends, with the mate bond, if two people already have really strong feelings towards each other. Their mate bond can surpass that of people who have known each other or been bonded for 10 years.” I corrected Jade who looked at me.
“Okay,” She answered simply, and I watched as people at the table smiled at this.
It wasn’t rude, but at the same time, it wasn’t really the response I expected.
“Anyway, what does any of this mean for Ben? What can we do to take this evil spirit out?” Tia asked, looking at Jade.
“Call his family so they can say their last goodbyes, there is no saving him now. The only way out is for him to die.” She answered casually.
“What? Jade, there has to be another answer to this.” Sasha said to her little sister.
“Well, I am listening,” Jade responded.

“We can expel the spirit, right?” Sasha asked,d and Jade didn’t answer.
“Why aren’t you answering? I know that there is a way to expel the spirit.” Sasha said, and Jade just sighed at this.
“There is no way,” She said,

“What is happening here? If you are going to say there is no way then explain.” I said and she sighed at this,
“Jade, I know that you are not here to stay. But it doesn’t mean that you will just sit and watch as my pack members die.” Sasha said and then got up. “I am a witch too, if you won’t do it, then I will.”
“Do that and you will die, there is no way to save him. But the only way to do it is at the cost of the caster’s life.” Jade said, and I frowned at this.
“What are you talking about?” Sasha asked Jade who nodded.
“There is a way, but the person casting the spell will have to die. It’s a life for a life, and that isn’t the only cost. The spirit inside him will be stronger, which means it will be harder to expel. You might remove him from this man’s body, but he will find another one, and then this time he will be stronger than ever.” Jade explained.
I looked at Sasha, who seemed like she was hearing it for the first time.
“That’s not the truth, I know what we were taught in school, that every spirit can be expelled. Are you saying they lied?” Sasha asked her little sister, who shook her head.
“I am saying that you taught only the basis, it wasn’t a lie. It can be expelled, but at the risk of another life. What you were taught was merely the surface stuff.” Jade explained.
“Wait, weren’t you guys taught the same things?” Nick asked.
“No, witches aren’t just secretive with other species. They hide things from their own people too. They hide all the darkness.” Jade answered his question.
“That’s not true, I don’t believe you.” Sasha said and picked up her phone. She put it on the loudspeaker and after a few rings the person answered. “Mom, we have a problem with an evil spirit. It is linked to the body.”
“Let Jade handle it, she is there, right? She knows what to do.” Her mother answered. I looked at Jade, who still seemed bored about everything going on.
“But Mom, Jade is talking about killing the poor man. She is talking about bringing his family to say their goodbyes.” Sasha said.

“Goodbyes? What the hell is Jade thinking? Why waste so much magic on such a stupid thing? It will take a lot of magic, and it will hurt her if she does that. Suppressing an evil spirit isn’t easy. Jade, if you are listening then kill it now.” Her mother said and hung up the phone.
Sasha looked at her phone as if she couldn’t believe what she heard.
“Your mother said that it is going to hurt you. What does she mean?” I asked Jade who
looked at Ben.
“Nothing serious,” She answered, but I could tell she wasn’t telling the truth.
“Hurry and call his family, I will work on getting Ben’s soul back so he can say goodbye to them.” Jade said as she got up.
I watched as she went to the kitchen and got some salt. She drew something around Ben or whatever it is that has taken over him.
Jade spoke about how everyone else was taught surface level stuff and how the darkness. was hidden from them. But what about her?
Her aunt back then was surprised that Jade could draw a blood contract. How much darkness has she witnessed?

Chapter 19: Goodbye
Jade’s pov
“I can help you with the spell, just tell me the words and I will be able to chant the spell,” Sasha said and I looked at her.
“I can’t take that risk, it’s a delicate spell and if you make even a single mistake then we will both die,” I explained to Sasha who frowned.
“You think that I can’t do the spell?” Sasha asked me and I sighed.
“If you are confident that you won’t lose focus then you can do it with me. But such spells are delicate as I told you, one mistake and you will die,” I said and she frowned.
“Wait, if the spell is so delicate and one mistake could result to death. Why are you doing it?” Alpha Dante asked me.
“Yes, why do you have to risk your life?” Tia asked me.
I looked around the room and everyone was looking at me.
How do I explain to them that I have to do this?
“It’s only dangerous when two people do it. When one does it, it’s easier,” I lied through my teeth.
I looked at my sister, it would be easier to do it with her but I don’t want that for her.
I don’t want her to feel the excruciating pain that comes after the spell is done.
I don’t want her to risk her life with any of this.
“Okay,” Tia said and seemed to believe me.
“I mind linked them, they will be here in 5 minutes,” Felix said and his eyes landed on me.
He still doesn’t like me much and I honestly don’t blame here.
The good thing is that I am not here to be liked by any of them.
I am merely a guest here who is going to leave soon.
I don’t even know why I am doing any of this.
Maybe it’s the nurse in me.
