Chapter 39: Undying devotion
Jade’s pov
I opened my eyes and stretched when I felt eyes on me.
I looked in the direction of the couch, and Dante was just sitting there staring at me.
No, it wasn’t Dante but Onyx since his eyes were a different color.
“Thinking of all the ways you want to strangle me?” I asked him, and he just scoffed.
“Why were you crying last night?” he asked me, and I sighed.

“I was not crying, I just had something in my eye,” I answered him, but he didn’t seem to believe me.
“Was it because of the necklace?” he asked me, and I sighed.
“I was not crying,” whisper yelled and then walked into the bathroom. I
thought he would leave me alone, but the bathroom door opened.
“I need to take a shower,” I said, and Onyx just stood there.
“Where is Dante?” I asked him, and he just shrugged.
“Still sleeping, I am in control every time when he sleeps,” he answered me.
“I won’t tell him, just tell me the truth. Was it because of the necklace?” he asked me, and I sighed.
“People already think that I am a terrible person for agreeing to this. The last thing I want is for them to think that I am trying to take her place,” I explained, and he nodded.
“It’s not because your necklace was smaller?” he asked me, and I sighed at this.
“No, it has nothing to do with that,” I said, and he squinted his eyes.
“But you did notice that yours was smaller,” he pointed.
“What do you want, Onyx?” I asked him, and he just shrugged.
“I just want to understand you,” he answered.
“I want to take a bath, can you leave?” I asked him, and he smiled at this.
“It’s nothing I haven’t seen before,” he said, and I sighed.
How is his wolf more annoying than him?
He then turned around and left the bathroom.

I really don’t understand the relationship between werewolves and their wolves.
I mean, how does it even work?
Do they share emotions?

I mean, Onyx has made it clear that he wants me dead. Is that what Alpha Dante wants as well?
Why do I even care about any of that?
I finished getting ready and went downstairs and found everyone already at the table.
“You disappeared from the party last night. What happened?” Sasha asked me, and I just
shrugged.
“I just needed some air,” I said, and my eyes landed on her neck.
She was wearing the other necklace that was given to me.
“Wow, that’s a beautiful necklace. Isn’t it similar to the one you were wearing last night?” Tia asked,
and Sasha nodded.
She placed her hand on Alpha Dante’s hand and smiled at him.
“My darling mate bought me two,” she said, and I just continued acting.
It was never mine to begin with. Everything he has belongs to her.
He is hers, and everything he buys also belongs to her as well.
“I also noticed that Tommy gave you a necklace as well,” Sasha said, and I smiled at this.
“Yes,” I answered and watched how she winked at me.
“So he still has a little crush on you. Will you and him get together one day?” she asked me.
“Why would she get together with Tommy? You forget that she is a married woman. And saying such things in front of her husband, what are you implying?” Addison asked her.
“Don’t start you two. Can we have a peaceful breakfast?” Mrs Odell asked.
“By the way, we will have guests tonight. Alpha Mitchell will be coming over, I expect everyone to be on their best behavior,” she said, and then her eyes landed on me.
“Why are you looking at me? I am basically a saint,” I said, and she shook her head.
“You threw one of the Alpha around like a piece of paper last night,” she pointed out.
“He was just annoying,” I retorted, and she smiled at nodded.

“I don’t disagree, but you need to hold in your anger once in a while,” she advised, and I nodded.
“Well then, I will be on my best behavior,” I retorted.
I spent the rest of the day at work and night came by faster than I thought.
“You are also coming?” I asked Director Jones, and she nodded.
“My husband was the Beta of the old Alpha. He has a close relationship with Alpha Mitchel,” she
answered, and I nodded.
We walked together, and I found myself loving the silence.
I liked it when there was no awkward silence when I walked with someone.
And there is no need to fill it with small talk.
We got there, and everyone was already seated.
“Alpha Mitchell, this is my beautiful wife, Jade,” Alpha Dante said as I was walking in.
“Good evening,” I said with the best smile I could master.
“I am Jade,” I said, and everyone started laughing.
“They mentioned that you would say that. It is nice to meet you Jade, this is my wife Jennifer and my son Jason,” he said, and I nodded.
After exchanging greetings, I sat down and got ready to eat.
“You are really beautiful, Jade,” Jennifer the wife said, and I smiled at this.
“Thank you,” I answered and watched how she nodded but kept stealing glances at me.
“Why did you agree to it?” she asked her, and her husband looked at her.
“You said you wouldn’t ask,” her husband said, and she just shrugged.
“I am genuinely curious. You are absolutely beautiful and smart to, why did you agree to such an unfair arrangement?” she asked me, and all eyes were on me.
“I didn’t have a choice. It was either this or a die a painful death,” I answered her, and she frowned.
“You see, her mother threatened her. Either she does this, or she dies,” Addison explained.
“But it isn’t a forever thing. She is basically a surrogate. After she gives birth, then she will go back to living her normal life,” Sasha said.
“Well, I guess that does make sense,” the woman said and then looked down.

I could tell she was itching to ask more questions, which made me like her.
“You can ask me,” I said, and she smiled as she looked up at me.
“After this, will you just move on with life? Will you get married again?” she asked me.

“No, I don’t want to get married. I don’t even want this marriage,” I answered, and she nodded.
“What if you meet a great man and you fall madly in love?” she asked me, and I thought about it.
“I don’t believe in love,” I answered and watched how her eyes widened at my revelation.
“You don’t believe in love?” she asked me, and I nodded.
“Why?” she asked me, and I just sighed.
“I just don’t believe in it,” I answered.
The rest of dinner was just her throwing questions at everyone.
I liked her honesty and how she didn’t talk behind my back but asked me the question straight up.
After dinner, I got ready for bed. As I closed my eyes, Alpha Dante spoke up.
“Why don’t you believe in love?” he asked me, and I got up to look at him.
“Because I don’t,” I answered, and he shook his head.
“There must be a reason, I bet you believed in love as a child. So what made you stop believing?”
he asked me.
“Well, first, my parents. Those two are married, but they hate each other,” I answered, and he
nodded.
Even though he has noticed, I think everyone can tell that they can’t stand each other.
“Is that it?” he asked me, and I shook head.

“I got older and started asking myself questions. There are about a billion people in this world. Why me? What makes me think that I deserve to love and be loved?” I asked him.
“Because you are beautiful,” he answered, and I shook

head.
“There are people who are even more beautiful than me,” I pointed out.
“Okay, before growing up. When you were still a child, what did you want in your life partner or husband?” he asked me, and I shrugged.
“The opposite of my father. He was a good father but a terrible husband. He let mom handle all the Coven matters and only gave her flowers on special occasions. Criticized her in front of us

instead of handling it privately,” I said, shaking my head.
“You don’t want flowers on special occasions?” he asked me, and I shook my head.
“Back then, I always thought that my husband would give me flowers every day. White lilies, they represent an undying devotion,” I explained.
“Undying devotion, that’s interesting,” he said and then laid back on the couch.
“Good night, Jade,” he said, and I smiled.
“Good night, Alpha Dante,” I said and also did the same.
I opened my eyes the next morning and saw something on the other pillow.
I rubbed my eyes so I could see properly, and it was a white lily.
Did Alpha Dante leave this here?
And why is that?
