Chapter 40 The one that got away

Chapter 40: The one that got away

Dante’s pov

I walked back to Jade’s room and found her standing and looking at the mirror.

Her attention was on the mirror that she didn’t pay any attention to me.

I slowly walked behind her and then looked at the mirror as well.

I watched how her eyes widened and she tried to hide what she was doing.

“Show me,” I said taking her hand and opening it.

In her hand, she had the flower that I left her this morning.

“I was coming to give it to you,” she said looking at my reflection.

“Really? I could have sworn that you were trying to put it in your hair,” I said and she shook her

head.

“Why would I do that? Here is your flower. I told you that I don’t want any gifts from you,” she said

and I smiled.

“I never said that I was the one who gave me that flower,” I retorted and she turned around to look

straight at me.

“You didn’t leave this on my bed?” she asked me and I shook my head.

She looked down and I could see her thinking but she frowned.

“You are the only person in the world that I have told about that stupid child dream of mine,” she said and I found myself smiling.

“Only person huh?” I asked her and she sighed.

“Wait, are you lying?” she asked me and I shook my head.

“I swear, I am not the one that gave you the flower,” I said raising my hand.

She looked at me and then smiled a little amused.

“Was it Onyx?” she asked me and I didn’t answer her.

“It’s actually from both of

us,” and she sighed.

“Why would you get me this specific flower? And when did you get it?” she asked me.

“Well, I know someone who has them,” I answered but I was lying.

I had to get up in the middle of the night, I woke Tia so she could find that flower.

The good thing is that we have someone in our pack who grows them.

“It wasn’t trouble at all,” I added and her eyes scanned my face.

“Still, I don’t think I can accept it,” she said and I looked at the flower.

She had removed almost all the stem and a little was left.

She wants to keep the flower but for some reason, her pride won’t let her.

I took it and then put it in my hair and she looked at me confused.

I looked at myself in the mirror and frowned a bit before taking it off.

I then pulled her closer to me and watched how she watched my every move.

I placed the flower on her hair and then smiled.

“Yes, I think it looks much better on you. Don’t you think so?” I asked her and she didn’t answer.

I made her turn around to look in the mirror again and she smiled.

“It does look better on me than you,” she said and I nodded.

“Now, you can walk around showing people how you have your husband’s undying devotion,” I said and watched as her eyes widened.

“Your undying devotion?” she asked me and I nodded.

“Yes,” I said and buried my head in her neck.

I could hear her heart beating like crazy.

I thought she was going to pull away since she made that rule of not touching each other.

But instead, she leaned into my arms and I felt her relax.

“Can I talk to you, Dante?” Mom asked me and I turned around.

I found her standing at the door and her eyes were on both of us.

“Good morning Mrs Odell, I will go downstairs,” Jade said and basically ran out of the room.

My mom’s eyes landed on me and I watched how she narrowed her eyes.

“I guess you are exactly like your father,” she said and I frowned at this.

“Why would you say that? Why would you compare me to that man when you know how much I hate him?” I asked him.

“You can hate him all you want. But he is your father and you are turning out to be exactly like him,”

she retorted.

“Don’t you remember? You and I found your father and that woman in a similar situation as you and

that girl,” she pointed out.

“Have you forgotten already?” she asked me and I closed my eyes.

How can I even forget that?

Flashback

“Come on, your father is probably in his office,” Mom said as we walked towards my father’s office.

I opened the door and the scene in front of me just left me frozen in place.

I was brought back when my mother started screaming at father.

He was hugging this other woman, it wasn’t just a normal hug.

The way he was holding as and also what he was saying to her.

That he needed more time to explain the situation to his family.

He was telling her that wants to be with her no matter what and that he won’t let anything get in

the way.

“GET OUT,” I ordered that woman and she bowed her head and turned to leave.

Instead of letting her go, Dad held her hand and he looked at me and my mother.

“I am sorry that you are finding out like this, but we need to talk,” he said still holding that woman.

My eyes landed on my mother, she seemed so broken as she looked at the scene in front of her.

Her husband and her mate of 20 years had just cheated on her.

Not only that, but he was also her childhood friend and also her first love.

End of flashback

“I once told you that your father was my first love,” she suddenly spoke up and I looked at her.

“He was, but I wasn’t his first love,” she added and I looked at her confused.

“That woman he left me for was his first love,” she explained and then sighed.

“That doesn’t make what he did alright. And I still can’t believe that you would compare me to him,” I retorted and she looked at me with a smile.

“I didn’t mean it in a bad way. I just wanted you to think about it for a second,” she said but I was

still confused.

“Your father was exactly like you. He would have done anything and everything for the Pack. And part of that was giving up on his first love,” she explained.

“Your father went away before his 18th birthday.

He was away for a month to visit an uncle and there he met that girl.

When he came back, he didn’t say her name but spoke about how in love he was with her,” she narrated and then sighed.

“But we turned 18 and found out we were mates. The girl he loved was an omega and his parents would have never accepted her. So he buried his feelings and thought that marrying his best friend

wouldn’t be that bad,” she added.

“However, I always got the feeling that she was the one that got away,” she explained and I looked

at her confused.

“The one that got away?” I asked her and she nodded.

wish you had more “It’s how you describe someone you love but couldn’t be with. Someone you time with or would love to meet again. You keep asking yourself, if we did things differently or we were different then would things be different,” she explained and I frowned.

“Your father deprived himself of a lot of things. So he could be a perfect leader and father. But everyone has a breaking point,” she said.

“Why are you telling me all of this?” I asked her and she just scoffed.

“The first time you met Jade, what was she wearing?” she asked me and I looked at her confused.

“Answer me, what was Jade wearing?” she asked me and I sighed.

“Sweatpants, she was wearing black sweatpants and a cardigan,” I answered and she smiled.

“What was Sasha wearing?” she asked me and I tried thinking back to that day.

It is the day I met my mate, I should remember what she was wearing.

“You obviously feel something for that girl. Stop trying to suppress it and find out what you feel for her. Let yourself feel whatever it is that you feel for her,” she said and I looked at her shocked.

“What? I am saying this as your mother and also as a woman who has been left by her husband,” she explained and then sighed.

“Jade will always be a part of your life. If she gives birth to a child and leaves, that child will always

be a constant reminder to you. If you don’t figure out what you feel for her then she will be the one

that got away,” she elaborated.

“She might have cut ties with her family. But you will meet her again, and what if those feelingsare stronger then?” she asked me.

“But Mom, I have a mate, why would you encourage this madness?” I asked her

“Because your mate created this madness. Jade is your wife, she isn’t come woman who just walked into your life. Families and even your mate consented to this,” she explained.

“Your marriage was supposed to be a forever thing. But Jade came up with the other option,” she

added.

“So, you are saying that it is okay? No Mom, that doesn’t make it okay in my eyes. The only person! am supposed to be in love with is Sasha,” I said and she smiled.

“Did I say anything about you being in love with Jade?” she asked me.

“Let yourself feel for the first time. Then you will have your answer, whether to let her go or make her stay when the time comes,” she added and then walked off.

Is it okay?

Is it okay to let myself feel?
