Chapter 50: Family
Jade’s pov
Flashback
“I can’t come tomorrow, I will be busy with your sister,” Mom said and I looked at Dad.
“Will you be there Dad?” I asked him hopeful and he nodded.
“Of course kiddo, I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” he answered and I smiled.
The next morning I looked at my family tree and couldn’t help but smile.
Today at school, we are having family tree presentations, and a parent or both parents are
requested to come.
I took my board and then headed to school.
The time for the presentations came and I looked around for my father but nothing.
I watched as each kid went to present with their parents.
The teacher kept looking at me.
When it was my turn she skipped my name.
I could tell she was trying to give me more time for my Dad to show up.
I looked around the room, everyone had someone there for them.
Someone showed up for them and stood by them during the presentation.
The looks of pity in people’s eyes as they looked at me.
I could hear them murmuring and calling me the forgotten child.
“Jade, it’s your turn now,” the teacher said and I got up with my board.
I looked around the room and I felt like crying but held it together.
I looked at the board and realized something.
On the board, my siblings were directly under one of our parents.
Sasha was under Mom and Jay was under Dad.
I was just there in the middle, like some intruder.
“Just give me a O ma’am,” I said and then walked out of the class.

As I was about to walk out a hand held mine and I turned around to find Aunt Emily standing there
with a smile.
“Come on kiddo,” she said with a big bright smile.
“Hello everyone, I am Emily Hale and I am this cute girl’s aunt. I know I don’t look like an Aunt, but what can I say? We have good genes,” she said with a smile.
I looked at her and then walked back into the classroom.
“My brother in law and sister couldn’t make it. Well, thank god because they would have put you guys to sleep with how boring they are,” she added.
“Start,” she whispered to me and I nodded and started with the presentation.
After that everyone started clapping their hands and I looked at my Aunt.
“Thank you,” I said and she winked at me.
School was out and we went out for ice cream and walked back home.
Dad’s eyes landed on me the moment we walked in and he frowned.

“Oh s**t, I am so sorry I forgot. Jay got in trouble at school and I completely forgot,” he said.
I was about to answer and Mom walked in with Sasha.
“Jack we need to talk,” she said to Dad.
“Actually, I need to talk to both of you. Did you forget that you have three kids and not two?” Aunt Emily asked them.
“What are you talking about?” Mom asked her.
“I am talking about how you two missed your daughter’s presentation at school,” she said to them.
Mom looked at me and then sighed.
“I can’t show up for every small thing. Didn’t you say that you will go?” she asked Dad.
“Yes, but something important came up,” Dad said and I looked at their exchange.
Every small thing, something important came up, those words became engraved in my mind.
I am not important enough for my parents.
“Are you listening to yourself?” Aunt Emily asked them.
“Stay out of this Emily, this is my family matters and you will not meddle,” Mom said.

“In case you forgot, this child is my niece and this is my family matter as well,” Aunt retorted.
“Just because you are my younger sister you think it gives you the right? Stay out of this,” Mom
said and then looked at me.
“We didn’t show up at school, you are okay, aren’t you? Nothing happened, why is everyone making a big deal out of it?” she asked and then stormed off.
“Nice job Jade, you made Mom angry,” Sasha said and followed after her.
“Jack follow me,” she yelled as she was walking away.
“Can we talk later?” Dad asked me and I nodded.
I walked to my room and there was a knock on the door.
“I thought maybe you would like some ice cream,” Aunt said and I frowned.
“We just had it,” I said and she nodded.
“You seemed to like it, so I bought it for you,” she said with a smile and I nodded.
We sat in silence for a few seconds.
“Aunt, what is family?” I asked her and she looked at me and then sighed.
“Honestly, I don’t have an idea,” she answered and then smiled.
“People think that the hardest thing in this world to explain is love, But I think it’s family, how do you define family?” she asked me.
“That’s what I asked you,” I said and she chuckled at this.
“Ohh yes, you did just ask me that,” she said and I smiled at this.
“I don’t know,” she answered.
She then took a look at my family tree board and then sighed.
“I once did it as well. No one showed up at mine as well,” she said and I looked at her.
“I am a middle child just like you. Your mother was the talented older witch who is going to be coven leader,” she said and then chuckled.
“Your uncle was the younger ambitious boy who wanted to overdo his older sister,” she added and then sighed.
“Just like you, I was the forgotten child,” she said and I
oked at her.
“They did acknowledge you, I mean eventually they did right?” I asked her and she shook her head.

“I decided to try and gain their attention by being a delinquent. I just started dating and sleeping around and ended up getting knocked up at 16,” she said.
“Don’t do that,” she added, and I looked at her and she sighed.
“In the end, I was the daughter that embarrassed them,” she answered.
I looked at her, she seemed so happy and full of life that I wouldn’t have guessed.
“Then what do I do? I am 10 so I can’t go sleeping around,” I said and watched how her eyes
widened.
“Forget I said that one, don’t do it. Men aren’t worth it, they are all trash,” she said and I chuckled at
this.
“You sound bitter,” I said and she nodded.
“I am very bitter,” she said and then sighed and held my hand.
“Just be yourself, try your best to live your best life. I can’t give you life advice, none of the adults can. Look at where most of them are,” she said.
“Then what do I do?” I asked her and she smiled.
“Just find in yourself what we couldn’t find in ourselves,” she answered.
“Find in you what I couldn’t in me,” she explained.
“Surround yourself with people that love you and care for you. I think that is what they call family,”
she added.
She kissed my forehead and then walked out.
So is that what family is?
It’s people who love and care about you.
End of flashback
I sighed as I turned back my attention to the file.
There was a knock on the door and I told the person to come in.
“I come in peace,” Alpha Dante said holding a flower in his hand and ice cream.
“About this morning,” he said and I frowned.
“You made it clear, you don’t need to come here and put on an act,” I said and he walked towards

“I am sorry, I didn’t mean to say all those words. They just came out, please don’t be angry with me,
“he said and I looked at him.
This man, I don’t have any right to be angry at him at all.
“I am not angry, you can leave those things there,” I said and he frowned at this.
“Come on Jade, just talk to me,” he said and I looked at him.
“What do you want me to say? You said nothing wrong, and I am not angry with you,” I said to him
and he looked at me.
“You seem angry,” he retorted and I just sighed.
“But I am not, all I want right now is to go back to work,” I said to him.
His eyes scanned my face as if he was looking for something.
“Okay, we will talk after work,” he said gently and left.
I am not 10 years old anymore, then, why did those stupid words hurt me?
It isn’t a lie, it’s a family matter and I am not his family.
Then why am I acting offended now that I was reminded of my true place?
