Chapter 51: Running

Jade’s pov

I was finishing up at work when someone knocked on the door.

“Come on in,” I said and the door opened to reveal Tia.

“I need your help,” she said and I sighed at this.

“Why me? Why did you tell me about your human mate? And why are you asking me to help you?” I

asked her.

She seemed confused as if she didn’t know the answer.

“I don’t know, for some reason, I feel drawn to you,” she answered and I sighed.

“I was talking to Sasha,” she said and I frowned at this.

“She mentioned and told me about how you left home,” she said and I sighed.

“And why did she tell you this?” I asked her.

“Well, she told me as a way to show me that I shouldn’t do the same,” she answered.

“Can I ask you something, why did you leave home?” she asked me and I sighed.

“I felt suffocated,” I answered and she nodded.

“You felt suffocated, I guess that is a good reason to leave,” she stated and then was silent for a

while.

“Do you regret it?” she asked me and I thought about it.

“That question doesn’t have a yes or no answer,” I said and she seemed confused. “Are you thinking of running away from home? Is that why you are asking me all of this?” I asked her.

“No, I am not thinking about it at all. I just wanted to hear your side of the story,” she answered and

I frowned.

“Okay, I guess that makes sense,” I said and then smiled.

“How about we walk back home together? I am done here,” I said and she nodded.

“So your mate, what kind of a guy is he?” I asked her and she smiled.

“He is socially awkward, but is very kind and gentle and loving,” she explained.

“He sounds like a really nice guy,” I said and she nodded but then sighed.

“Unfortunately I am going to reject him,” she said and I looked at her confused.

“You have given up?” I asked her and she nodded at this.

“It’s not worth it, humans aren’t as affected by the mate bond as us werewolves. I will be stuck in a marriage where I love my husband more than he loves me,” she explained.

“Is that how the mate bond works? The other person tends to love the other person more?” I asked

her and she nodded.

“But if you reject your mate, what will you do next?” I asked her and she shrugged.

“I will wait for my brother to find me a suitable match,” she answered.

“That sounds reasonable, well then, I am glad you have made peace with it,” I said and she nodded.

We got home and it was almost time for dinner.

I went to my room and started watering my plants and I noticed something interesting.

I knew something was up, should I just wait and see what happens?

The door opened and Dante walked in.

“Can we talk?” he asked me and I shook my head.

“Not now, it’s almost time for dinner,” I said and then looked outside.

It was already dark and the plants didn’t need any more sunlight so I closed the window.

“Come on Jade, just let me make amends,” he said and I looked at him.

“For what? You didn’t do anything wrong,” I said.

“I basically told you to shut up this morning. I f****d up and I am really sorry about that,” he said.

“You did nothing wrong, I was meddling and I shouldn’t have done that,” I retorted and he sighed.

“What is wrong with you?” he asked me getting frustrated.

“You are angry with me. So get angry, yell at me, and scream at me. Curse, but please don’t be so cold,” he said and I looked at him.

“I will see you downstairs,” I said and then headed downstairs.

Anyway, patching things up with him would be pointless anyway.

I feel like we keep taking two steps forward and a thousand steps back.

And now I realize the reason for it.

We are merely just using each other right now.

Dante is using me to save his mate and their mate bond.

While I am using him to piss off my sister.

Well, one of those things outweigh the other but that is just it.

This relationship is fake and I think a few compliments of his made me forget that.

We got downstairs and I sat down but I couldn’t eat.

I hate when I am like this, even if I do put food in my mouth it tastes like sand.

The dinner table was quiet which says a lot since about 30 people were there.

No one said a word, they all just ate in silence.

“So you are still sleeping with me tonight?” Addison asked me and I nodded.

“Wait, what did you say?” Alpha Dante asked me.

“Jade and I are having a sleepover tonight,” Addison repeated.

I watched as he looked at me and he seemed to be having an internal monologue.

Probably talking to Onyx about something.

After dinner, we got ready for bed but I couldn’t sleep.

When I got my signal I went outside and waited for the door.

“How did you know?” Tia asked me.

“Well, you were asking me too many questions. Plus, the smile on your face when you spoke about him. I could tell that he isn’t someone you want to lose,” I answered her.

Well, I left out the little detail that gave it away.

Sasha, my older sister suddenly telling her about how I left home.

“Sasha was wrong, I didn’t leave home I ran,” I said and she looked at me.

“Fine, the I am also doing the same. You did it, are you telling me that you were miserable?” she

asked me and I nodded.

“I was miserable, I was away from my family. They weren’t there for the big milestones or the small ones,” I said and she frowned.

“I celebrated my birthdays alone with only a muffin. I had no one waiving at me during my

graduation,” I said and then sighed.

“Your mate will fill some kind of hole in your heart. But he won’t be able to fill in the big one that will be made the moment you leave,” I informed her.

“I am a coward, I have always been a coward. I ran away from my responsibilities, and even now I am still running away. I am running away from a dignified death,” I added.

She looked at me confused and then I sighed at this.

“What do you mean?” she asked me and I smiled.

“The truth is, I would rather die a painful death as a madwoman than this fate. But I am a coward, the thought of death scared me into this,” I explained.

“Don’t let the thought of losing scare you into this terrible decision,” I added.

“My brother is stubborn, once he decides on something then no one can change his mind. This will work for me, eventually they will forgive and forget,” Tia said with a confident stance.

looked at her and then nodded as I moved out of her way.

“You are letting me go?” she asked me and I nodded.

“I didn’t work out for me. I didn’t have a great family like yours that would welcome me back with open arms,” I said and then smiled.

“Maybe you will find in yourself something that I couldn’t find in me,” I added and walked back

inside.

Morning came and people started running around looking for her.

“Some of her things are gone, including important documents,” Sasha said.

“That’s not possible, are you saying that she ran away?” Mrs Odell asked.

I watched as she sat down as if trying to calm herself.

“How can this happen? None of you heard her leave at all?” Alpha Dante asked.

“No, I slept like a baby the whole night, Felix answered.

“Wait, is it possible that we were all drugged?” Vanessa asked.

“That’s not possible. Jade couldn’t sleep the entire night, when I woke up she was just sitting there, “Addison pointed out.

All eyes turned to me and Sasha suddenly walked towards me.

“You helped her didn’t you? You helped her run away. There is also one herb that is capable of doing this and it is in your room,” Sasha pointed out.

“Is this true? Did you honestly help her run?” Mrs Odell asked me.

“No, but I didn’t stop her,” I answered and everyone looked at me.

“Why not? Why didn’t you wake us up?” Alec asked me.

“I just thought that it was your family matter. It has nothing to do with me,” I answered causally.

I could feel Alpha Dante’s burning gaze on me and his fury.

“You let her go?” he suddenly asked.

I looked at him, I could feel his Alpha aura and so could everyone in the room.

They had their heads bowed to him but I didn’t.

I bow to no one, “yes, I let her go,” I answered.

“You also helped her, how else could she have known what plant to use to drug all of us?” Sasha

asked me.

“She can read,” I pointed out.

“Do you

think that this is a laughing matter?” Alpha Dante’s voice echoed all around the house.

Huh, what is he going to do?
