Chapter 150 I Am Not Worthy

Noelle planted both hands on her hips. “Only bad women ride in Uncle Theodore’s carriage. Even when I was little, he would never let me set foot inside. What makes you so special?”
She glared up at Margaret sharply. “I thought you were Stella at first, but you are Margaret. The rumors must be true. You visit the Ducal Palace day after day just to lure Uncle Theodore in.”
Margaret let out a faint, helpless laugh. “You’ve misunderstood, Princess Noelle. Prince Theodore is far too great a man for anyone to manipulate so easily. I am only his healer. He has been unwell lately, so I tend to his condition…”
“That’s a lie,” Noelle huffed. “I’m still young, but I know no woman practices medicine. Even if a few do, it would never be someone like you. A sheltered noble lady could never have such skill. You make up wild excuses just to get close to him. You have no shame at all.”
Margaret fell quiet.
She thought of Noelle as just a child and had no wish to take her petty words to heart.
They would rarely cross paths again, so ignoring her was the simplest choice.
Seeing Margaret stay silent, Noelle grew smug. “Cat got your tongue? At least you know how to feel ashamed. Stay far away from Uncle Theodore from now on.
“Look at yourself. You’re overweight, and your reputation is ruined. You’re plain, not nearly beautiful enough to stand out. Women like you are everywhere. Uncle Theodore is a man born above all others— you would never even be chosen as his concubine.”
Noelle’s eyes lit up with pure admiration whenever she spoke of Theodore.
She continued, “Uncle Theodore is the most handsome man in the whole realm. He’s skilled in combat, charming, and admired by every noble lady in Breston. His future wife must be the most outstanding woman alive. Take the daughter from General Hickman’s Estate, for example. She may not be the fairest beauty, but she is a trained warrior, bold and heroic–nothing like fragile sheltered girls,”
Noelle stared at Margaret without mercy. “I’ll tell you the truth. Uncle Theodore already has someone he cares for: Myrna Hickman. She’s a renowned scholar and a master of martial arts.
“They grew up side by side as childhood sweethearts. She’s turned down countless marriage proposals and waited faithfully for him until she turned eighteen. He has never taken a wife for her sake. They are meant to be, and she is the only one worthy of being his wife.”
Margaret had no words to reply.
She tried to tune the words out, yet every sentence sank into her chest all the same.
A faint, unexplainable sadness settled over her.
“Hey, I’m talking to you. Are you even listening?” Noelle snapped, nose high in the air.
Margaret nodded calmly. “You are right, Princess Noelle. I am not worthy.”

It was the plain truth.
In her heart, Theodore was truly an extraordinary man–wealthy, powerful, and generous enough to gift her countless rewards. He deserved every bit of that praise.
Noelle rolled her eyes. “Good. At least you have some self–awareness.”
Cyan stepped forward gently. “Princess Noelle, Ms. Campbell is Prince Theodore’s honored guest. Please speak to her with respect.”
Noelle shot him a sharp glance. “This is just how I talk. I haven’t been rude at all. Cyan, you serve Uncle Theodore–why are you taking her side?”
Cyan bowed his head. “Ms. Campbell is Prince Theodore’s savior.”
Noelle’s mouth twitched. She glanced at him. “Oh. I get it now.”
“Please treat her with courtesy,” Cyan urged.
“I’m only speaking the truth,” Noelle retorted coldly, turning back to Margaret. “Do you know Myrna? Are you half as pretty as her? Can you fight? Could you take down three grown men alone? She’s a true warrior, taming wild horses and defeating strong opponents. You could never do any of that.”
She lifted her chin triumphantly. “Think hard on it. You don’t measure up. Keep your distance from Uncle Theodore, and never set foot in his carriage again. I wouldn’t even waste my time scolding you if I hadn’t seen you ride with him today.”
Cyan shook his head quietly at the sight of Noelle’s arrogance. He leaned close to Margaret and whispered softly, “Pay her words no mind, Ms. Campbell. Princess Noelle is not cruel at heart. She simply adores Prince Theodore fiercely and dislikes having other women near him. Let her talk, and she will tire herself out soon enough.”
