Chapter 239 Get Out of My Room
Finished
People still wandered the streets now and then, yet the bustle had faded a great deal compared to earlier.
Margaret finished an entire pot of wine and sat quietly by the window for a very long time.
She watched Lisa and the others busying themselves and chose not to interrupt. Once she drained her cup. she left the place without a word.
Every servant bowed respectfully as she passed.”
Even Jonas stepped forward to curry favor, his gaze filled with sincere admiration and regard.
A warm haze of wine clouded Margaret’s mind. She paid little mind to their gestures, spoke barely a word, and climbed into her carriage to head home.
The moment the carriage set off, the coachman spoke up. “It’s strange–I swear I just saw Ms. Stella Campbell’s carriage passing by.”
Margaret leaned against the carriage window, letting the cool night air brush her face. “Stella prides herself on being a proper noble young lady. She never goes out after dark. You must have mistaken someone else for her.”
The coachman said. “I know her personal coachman well, so I’m certain I wasn’t wrong. Still, it’s the Lantern Fair tonight. It makes sense she’d come out to view the lanterns.
“Even so, Ms. Campbell, you ought to bring more attendants when you go out. It’s far too late at night, and with only me as your driver–what if you run into ill–intentioned strangers?”
Margaret replied in a calm tone. “A large group only draws attention. One driver is more than enough.
“The last coachman was easy to bribe by anyone who offered him a coin. I’ve put my trust in you now. Stay loyal to me always, and I’ll never treat you poorly–never betray me and you’ll want for nothing.”
The coachman said firmly. “You have my word, Ms. Campbell. I will never betray you.”
A cool night breeze drifted through the carriage. Margaret closed her eyes, overcome with weariness.
It felt like only a short moment of rest before the carriage pulled to a stop outside the Prime Minister’s
Estate.
By the time she stepped down, the wine had fully gone to her head.
Margaret rubbed her temples with a helpless sigh.
What kind of wine was this anyway? It’s far stronger than I expected.
I need to take something to sober up.
With her eyes still shut, she reached into her storage space and pulled out a small sobering pill.
She opened her eyes, ready to take it–only to freeze the instant she looked up.

Chapter 239 Get Out of My Room
Her courtyard was deathly quiet–not a single torch or lamp was lit anywhere.
Margaret called out softly as she swallowed the pill, “Winter?”
This is odd. Winter always has the lamps lit and waiting for me whenever I return home.
Could it be I’m far too late tonight?
Has she already fallen asleep?
The wine’s effect lingered heavily in her veins, leaving Margaret drained and drowsy.
She stumbled slowly into her private chamber, closed the door behind her, kicked off her shoes, and prepared to lie down on the bed to rest.
Half lost in a fog of drunkenness, she suddenly made out a figure, sitting right at the foot of her bed.
Margaret jumped in fright, her voice sharp with alarm. “Who’s there?”
Christopher said, “Margaret, you’re finally back.”
The sound jolted Margaret fully alert, the haze of alcohol fading away at once.
She stared at the man in utter shock. “Christopher? What are you doing here?”
Finished
Christopher rose to his feet slowly, looking completely unconcerned, and walked over to light a lamp.
The candlelight flickered gently, letting Margaret see his face clearly at last.
His skin was pale, and exhaustion weighed heavily on his frame.
His legs were wrapped thickly in bandages, and he limped step by step toward her. “I’ve been waiting here for you a very long time.”
Margaret stepped back two paces on instinct, her tone sharp and guarded. “Stay right there. What reason do you have to wait for me in the middle of the night? This is the Prime Minister’s Estate—and this is my private chamber. Leave at once.”
Christopher paid no heed to her warning and closed the distance between them in moments. “Why do you reek of wine? Have you been out drinking? How much did you have?”
Margaret snapped coldly, gesturing toward the door, “It’s none of your business. Get out of my room.”
