Chapter 240 Had No Way to Fight Back
Beneath the dim candlelight, Christopher’s face was pale.

He said, “I truly cannot understand how we ended up like this. You loved me so deeply once. When I stayed away, you’d always find some way to seek me out, just to see me. Now that I’ve come to you on my own, you’re desperate to drive me away. Maybe this isn’t some game of yours to draw me closer, then push me away. If you’re only trying to punish me, you’ve done more than enough. I’ve finally come to understand my own heart. Why won’t you just forgive me?”
Margaret had no wish to listen to his empty words. She quietly flicked an acupuncture needle out from her palm.
The needle was mere inches from pricking Christopher when he suddenly grabbed a cup from the table and swatted it away with one swift motion.
Margaret froze in surprise. “You guard yourself against me so carefully–how can you speak such hollow, insincere words?”
Christopher stared at her with a look of raw agony. “Who is the one being fake here? I’m speaking from the bottom of my heart, yet you try to attack me in secret. Isn’t that far more dishonest?
“I tell you I love you, and you sneak up to strike me with hidden weapons. You once swore you’d marry no one but me, yet you’ve turned your heart to Uncle Theodore without a second thought. You even go out drinking late at night just for his sake. I’ve watched you grieve over me time and again, but I never once saw you drown your sorrows in wine for my sake.”
Margaret took a deep breath and stepped backward toward the door. “Think whatever you like. I want nothing more to do with you ever again.”
Christopher let out a cold laugh. “Then who do you intend to give your heart to? Uncle Theodore? Do you truly believe a few kind gestures mean he’s fallen for you? He once had a woman who stayed right by his side day and night–and you replaced her soon enough. How genuine could his feelings ever be? I am far better than him. At least I love two women openly and honestly. He hides behind a false mask of virtue, pretending to be something he’s not.”
He watched the conflicted look cross Margaret’s face, then rose abruptly and stepped toward her. “Why do you wear that expression? Are you grieving for him? You have no right to. You belong to me. Every emotion you feel should belong only to me–joy, sorrow, heartache, all of it meant only for me. Do you understand?”
Christopher reached out and gripped her shoulders tightly, his anger plain to see.
Margaret tried to strike at him again, but he seized her wrists tightly.
His strength was overwhelming.
He channeled all his force, and a sharp cracking sound cut through the air. The pressure was so intense that it nearly fractured the bones in Margaret’s hands.
Margaret cried out in pain and lifted her leg to kick him hard. “Let go of me!”
Christopher shouted, his eyes blazing with hurt and fury, “I won’t. You belong to me. We were always meant to be husband and wife. How dare you push me away? How dare you try to attack me again?

“I love you with everything I have. How could you turn your heart to another so easily? Do you have any idea how many people mock me now? All because you keep rejecting me again and again. Gossip spreads through every corner of the court, saying I cannot even hold onto one woman. You’ve stripped me of all my pride and honor.”
“Let me go… You’re hurting me.” Her wrists throbbed with sharp, unrelenting ache.
Christopher frowned slightly and finally loosened his grasp on her arms.
He said, “Margaret, let us start over. Please?”
“Get away from me.” Margaret lashed out with a hard kick at him, then reached for the door, ready to leave.
But Christopher wrapped an arm around her waist.
He murmured, “I waited up all night for you. Why run off so soon after only a few words?”
Margaret pulled out a handful of acupuncture needles this time, ready to drive them into him without hesitation.
Yet he had clearly anticipated her move. He pinned both her hands firmly against her body and pressed her harshly back against the wooden door.
Christopher said, “I knew you’d use those hidden needles. I have no idea where you picked up such cunning tricks, but I’ve spent long enough by your side to learn all your ways.”
As long as he held her hands restrained, she had no way to fight back.
On top of that, her strength was already fading fast.
The air inside the chamber grew strangely warm and thick.
In that instant, Margaret finally realized the truth. “You’ve lit enchanting incense?”
Christopher admitted, “I have.”
He pinned her wrists above her head, unable to hold back as he pressed soft kisses to the top of her head.
Christopher said in a gentle voice, “I lit it the moment I heard you return. This incense has no scent at all- it dulls one’s senses, drains their strength little by little, and stirs warm longing in the heart. I already took the antidote beforehand. I thought you’d notice right away, but the wine clouded your mind, and you’ve only just realized it now.
“Margaret, my love for you is real. I still remember your breathtaking dance at the royal banquet–your graceful figure is etched forever in my mind, and I have never been able to forget you.
“I regret letting someone as beautiful as you slip away from me. The first time I held you in my arms, I knew you were the most alluring woman alive. Your waist is so soft; your hair carries such a sweet scent. I’ve longed for you, endlessly, all this time.”
“Winter! Winter!” Margaret shouted toward the outside of the room at the top of her lungs.
She grew far too overconfident and all but forgot that Christopher wielded formidable internal strength as
