But after Melanie had spoken, seeing all the guests in black milling about the venue gave her the creeps. It felt unsettlingly like her family was genuinely holding a funeral.
“Fiona, that's enough,” Vincent said, putting on his parental authority.
“Black is an elegant and sophisticated color, perfect for formal occasions. This shows that Mrs. Hale takes this evening seriously, which means she takes us seriously.”
Being scolded by her own father, Fiona wasn't about to back down.
“Dad, why are you defending her? Don’t you know how arrogant she is? They were the ones begging to work with us, and then she just showed her face at the meeting for a minute and left.”
“I heard about that…”
Standing to the side, Evelyn listened to Fiona and Vincent's conversation, a smug satisfaction growing inside her.
The bigger the fuss over Melanie not taking the meeting seriously, the better.
That way, Dominic would understand that Melanie was no 'supportive wife.'
“You call someone over for a meeting, but you set the clock in the conference room ahead to frame Mrs. Hale for being late. Not only that, but you didn't even offer her a chair, so she had no choice but to leave… And now you have the nerve to blame her!”
As Vincent spoke, he raised his hand as if to strike Fiona.
Melanie remained silent, content to just watch the drama unfold.
She knew perfectly well that Vincent was just putting on a show; he would never actually hit Fiona.
If Vincent had ever genuinely tried to discipline Fiona, she wouldn't have grown up to be the arrogant person she was today.
After hearing what Vincent said, Dominic looked at Melanie in shock.
So… the reason Melanie had made no progress on the project that day was because Fiona had been making things difficult for her.
And yet, he had readily believed Fiona’s words and been utterly disappointed in Melanie.
Thinking of this, Dominic couldn't help but lean in and whisper in Melanie’s ear, “Why didn’t you tell me someone was bullying you?”
