Unfortunately, the technology was still in its early stages, and very few people were actually willing to pay for it.
It was a classic case of having a price tag but no market.
Several times, Melanie couldn't resist the urge to raise her paddle.
But just as she was about to lift it, she forced herself to put it down.
After the auctioneer announced the start of the bidding, an unprecedented silence fell over the entire auction hall.
Ten minutes passed, and not a single person had raised their paddle to make a bid.
If this continued, the item would fail to sell.
"One billion."
Suddenly, someone called out a price.
Melanie was startled.
After three seconds of silence, the hall erupted in an uproar.
Everyone turned in unison to look at the person who had raised their paddle and shouted the sky-high price of one billion dollars.
"Who is that? Have they lost their mind?"
Evelyn couldn't help but mutter.
Dominic didn't say anything, but he thought the same thing as Evelyn.
Melanie, however, had the complete opposite thought—
Now that's someone with vision!
And deep pockets!
Melanie pursed her lips. It would be a lie to say she wasn't envious.
One billion dollars—
It was the highest price of any item at today's auction.
Looking back at all sorts of auctions over the years, a bid of this magnitude was exceedingly rare.
The lighting technician cleverly cast a spotlight on the guest who had raised the paddle, and at the same moment, the man's face appeared on the large screen.
The moment she saw his face clearly, Melanie's eyes widened.
Why is it him...?
"Bro, isn't that... Gabriel Whitmore, the vice president of Stellaris PharmaTech?"
Evelyn tugged on Dominic's sleeve.
Dominic grunted in affirmation, his brow deeply furrowed.
To this day, he still remembered how at the Hale family banquet, it was this very Mr. Whitmore from Stellaris PharmaTech who had brazenly taken Melanie away.
On the big screen, Gabriel was grinning, his smile full of confidence, seemingly enjoying the feeling of being the center of attention.
In Melanie's view, this was probably just a handsome, rich, and powerful man playing the field.
Gabriel wouldn't take it seriously.
And she hadn't thought much of it either.
Therefore, she couldn't be sure if Gabriel would agree if she asked to borrow this integrated AI bioprinter.
Sighing, the more Melanie thought about it, the less certain she felt.
After the high bid of one billion dollars was called out, no one else competed. The auctioneer brought down the hammer, sealing the deal.
"Sold! Congratulations to Mr. Gabriel Whitmore for acquiring the final item of tonight's auction—the integrated AI bioprinter—for one billion dollars. Once again, congratulations to Mr. Whitmore."
The auctioneer led the applause, and the hall instantly thundered with it.
The auction house's general manager, along with his staff, approached Gabriel and respectfully presented him with a Certificate of Ownership with a gilded cover.
With this certificate, Gabriel could retrieve his prize at any time.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, Gabriel signed the certificate and then left his seat.
Everyone in the hall was bewildered.
They watched as Gabriel walked toward a less prominent seating area. Countless eyes followed his steps, and the spotlight moved with him.
Then, everyone saw clearly that Gabriel had stopped in front of a lady.
