Melanie looked at the man in confusion, about to ask if this was Elias's doing, but he answered her unspoken question first.
"This is Mr. Whitmore's arrangement."
"Mr. Whitmore?"
Melanie was taken aback.
Beside them, Dominic's expression changed instantly.
Mr. Whitmore again.
And so, right in front of Dominic and Evelyn, Melanie was personally escorted by the event organizer to the seat of honor, right in the center of the head table.
Many guests noticed the seating arrangement and couldn't help but glance at Melanie a few more times.
Evelyn was furious.
How did Melanie deserve this?!
But then she remembered that her and Dominic's seats were in the VIP section, not too far from the head table, and she began to calm down.
"Excuse me, ma’am, you can't sit here."
However, just as Evelyn sat down in the VIP section, a staff member came over to ask her to move.
"What?"
Evelyn stood up angrily.
"Why can't I sit here? I have an invitation."
With that, she nudged Dominic with her elbow.
"Show it to him."
Dominic immediately showed his invitation to the staff member.
"It says very clearly on this invitation that our seats are in the VIP section, right here."
The staff member looked at it and remained composed.
"Ma’am, the invitation is indeed valid…"
Upon hearing this, Evelyn's lips curled into a triumphant smile.
"However, this is the gentleman's invitation, and his seat is in the VIP section, but you are not… Our policy states that accompanying guests can only sit in the general seating area in the back."
With that, the staff member made a polite gesture, clearly indicating for Evelyn to leave.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Evelyn's anger flared, and she pointed furiously at Melanie, who was seated at the head table.
"Why does she, who doesn't even have an invitation, get to sit at the head table, while I can't even sit in the VIP section?"
Preston: [I'm here with a colleague. He happens to know the organizers. He saw you were having some trouble and asked him to help out.]
Melanie thanked Preston in her message:
[Thank you. I didn't expect that from you. You seem so distant, but you're actually really kind.]
After sending that message, she didn't receive any more replies from Preston.
Melanie tilted her head.
She found Preston to be rather moody.
He had been so proactive when he ordered her takeout and arranged her seat.
But it was also a fact that he would unilaterally end their conversations after just a couple of messages.
Perhaps Preston was busy with work.
Either way, she had thanked him, so she wouldn't seem impolite.
She and Preston weren't close to begin with, so there was no need to get to know him better.
Melanie put down her phone just as the symposium began, and her attention shifted to the content of the discussion.
The core topic of this symposium was—the research and development of a new anti-cancer drug, and its impact and prospects for the current industry.
Melanie's expression gradually grew serious.
