Although Melanie's tone wasn't accusatory, Bryant could tell she had seen right through his little scheme.
"I'm sorry…"
Bryant lowered his head slightly and apologized honestly.
"Elina… she really does have something important to tell you…"
He wasn't lying.
But it was also true that he wanted to spend the festival with Melanie.
"Then let's find a place to get something to eat!"
Melanie said, then looked down at Elina. "Elina, what do you want to eat?"
"I want… pizza… is that okay?"
"Of course."
Melanie gave Elina a brilliant smile.
Elina was much more confident now than when Melanie had first met her, which pleased her greatly.
Even though Bryant was the one who had asked her out, she was the one looking for a restaurant.
The three of them went into a pizza place in the square.
As they were ordering, the waiter made a well-intentioned, casual comment.
"It's so nice to see a family of three out celebrating the festival together."
The waiter, wearing a professional smile, left after saying his piece.
Bryant looked embarrassed, a faint flush creeping up his neck.
"I wish Melanie could be my mommy…" Elina whispered, propping her chin on her hands.
"Elina!" Bryant couldn't help but hiss in a low voice.
He hadn't told Elina to say that, and he was afraid of giving Melanie the wrong idea.
Melanie, however, remained perfectly composed.
She paid no mind to the waiter's comment or Elina's words.
After all, kids say the darndest things.
