She leaned in and spoke to Dr. Atherton with utmost respect.
Abby Corbett felt a few inscrutable gazes on her from the moment she entered the venue, but she didn't have time to care. She only wanted to carry out Dr. Lowe's instructions as quickly as possible.
She hurried to Dr. Atherton's side and murmured, "Dr. Atherton, Dr. Lowe asked me to inform you that Director Atherton still has a few final preparations to make. The launch might be delayed by a few minutes."
"Is Hulda alright? Did something happen?" he asked urgently.
Those seated close enough overheard the exchange. They noted that upon hearing about a delay, Dr. Atherton's first instinct wasn't to demand an explanation, but to ask if his protégé was safe.
Clearly, the old man cared deeply for his student.
Seated two chairs away, Caspian obviously heard Abby's words. His eyes darkened instantly as he locked his gaze onto her.
Abby caught Caspian staring out of the corner of her eye and blinked in surprise. She hadn't expected to run into the capitalist here.
Still, putting her internal complaints aside, she quickly reassured the anxious mentor. "Director Atherton is perfectly fine. She just ran into a slight issue earlier that held her up. She's getting ready now and will be out momentarily."
Hearing that Hulda was safe, Dr. Atherton finally relaxed.
The tension in Caspian's jaw loosened as well, though he still leaned in to check on the older man. "Dr. Atherton, do you need the medical team?"
To ensure Dr. Atherton could attend today safely, Caspian had pulled every string necessary to have an entire elite medical team on standby just outside the doors, ready to rush in at a moment's notice.
Dr. Atherton waved a dismissive hand. "I'm fine. If Hulda says we wait a few minutes, then we wait."
Seeing that he wasn't angry, and noting that the other VIPs in the front row had no objections, Abby breathed a sigh of relief.
She gave a polite nod to the academic heavyweights and quickly turned to leave.
Before she went, she couldn't resist throwing a nasty glare at Caspian, hoping this ruthless capitalist wouldn't try to cause any trouble for Director Atherton today.
Faced with Abby's impatience, Sylvie looked slightly awkward but forced a polite smile. "Hello, Ms. Atherton. I'm Sylvie Sinclair from H&J Technologies. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Since Caspian had humiliated her, making friends with his date was definitely the right move.
This way, H&J could still establish a connection with him through her.
Herbert easily guessed what Sylvie was trying to do. While he loathed having to suck up to people, he put on a charming smile for the sake of H&J and gave Abby a courteous nod.
"Hello, Ms. Atherton. I'm Herbert Jewell from H&J Technologies."
"Huh?" Abby looked at them like they were crazy. "You've got the wrong person. My last name is Corbett, not Atherton."
Herbert and Sylvie exchanged a panicked look, the color draining from their faces.
Back at the resort, Caspian had clearly stated his date's last name was Atherton.
