She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 161

For a split second, Herbert Jewell was utterly bewildered.

His Adam's apple bobbed, his breathing growing heavy.

But in the next second, when he saw Caspian Sterling following closely behind Hulda Atherton, his breath hitched.

Hulda had run into Caspian right at the entrance of the banquet hall.

After the press conference ended, she had been busy arranging transportation to send Dr. Atherton back to the sanatorium, and then she had to hand over her pending tasks to Brandon Lowe. She hadn't spared a single thought for this man.

As she made her way from the main auditorium to the banquet hall, she hadn't bumped into him, so she assumed he had already left.

After all, based on what she knew of him, he was the type who never bothered attending post-conference receptions or cocktail hours.

As the adopted son of the wealthiest man in the city, Bertram Sterling, people were always desperate to flock to him. He never needed to initiate socializing.

Yet, to her surprise, there he was, standing right at the entrance of the banquet hall.

Someone must have crossed him again, because his brows were furrowed so tightly they could crush a fly.

"Why are you so late?" Caspian demanded, his voice low.

Hulda's expression remained perfectly neutral, her tone completely flat. "Since when does my schedule concern you, Mr. Sterling?"

Abby Corbett, tailing right behind Hulda, first shot Caspian a thoroughly annoyed look, then glared fiercely at Dylan beside him.

These two again!

How annoying!

Why were they constantly hovering around the Director?

Dylan caught the glare and felt completely baffled, but he had no choice but to swallow his protests.

Hulda didn't waste her breath arguing with Caspian. Naturally, she wasn't vain enough to assume he had been waiting specifically for her.

After politely entertaining the guests for a while, Hulda finally snagged a brief moment of peace.

She led Abby over to a quiet corner of the banquet hall, her eyes drifting toward Caspian, who was still casually holding court in the center of the room.

Abby thoughtfully handed her a glass of water. "I guess that capitalist is good for something after all. He really took a lot of the heat off you, Director."

This was Abby's first time attending a high-profile networking event like this, and she was just as inexperienced as Hulda. If Caspian hadn't stepped in, the two of them would have been completely eaten alive by the crowd.

Hulda watched the effortlessly composed Caspian, a man clearly in his element, and simply took a small sip of her water without saying a word.

"Hulda."

Suddenly, Herbert's voice sounded right beside her.

There was a faint, complicated tremor in the man's tone.

Hulda paused, the glass halfway to her lips. How could she have forgotten that Herbert Jewell was still here?
