"Oh... I see..." Hayden took a very awkward sip of his tea.
"Indeed." Just thinking about Hulda ruined Wade's mood. "Let's not talk about her. It's probably just a phonetic similarity anyway."
Shifting his focus back to the phantom player, Wade's excitement returned full force. "Hayden, please, tell me more about her. How is she doing? Can you introduce her to me?"
The Master's Cup was fast approaching. If he could recruit her now and fast-track the renewal of her Ninth Dan certificate and paperwork, she could just barely make the deadline to compete.
Hayden understood his urgency and nodded. "I can certainly try, but I have to ask her for permission before I can give you a concrete answer."
"I see..." Wade looked slightly deflated, then pressed, "Well, do you have her contact information? Can you give it to me? I'll reach out to her myself!"
Being agonizingly close to finally contacting the prodigy he had been obsessed with for so long, Wade had zero patience left.
This time, however, Hayden wasn't as accommodating. "I don't think that's appropriate. I can't just hand out her personal number without her explicit consent."
Hayden paused before explaining his reasoning. "Besides, today was our very first time meeting. If I suddenly hit her with demands like this, she might think I have an ulterior motive for reaching out."
That effectively killed any hope Wade had of demanding her number on the spot.
"Right... I suppose you have a point." Wade couldn't completely mask his crushing disappointment.
Seeing his reaction, Hayden smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry. I've scheduled to meet with her again tomorrow. I'll ask her in person. It's much better than rushing it over a phone call today. You can wait one more day, can't you?"
Wade's eyes instantly lit up. "Of course! One day is nothing. Thank you so much, Hayden! Please, do everything you can to convince her tomorrow!"
"Rest assured, I want to see her back at a Go tournament just as much as you do." Hayden smiled warmly.
*It must be about that divorce and marriage business,* Hayden figured.
"Make yourself at home here. Drink, play a few rounds, whatever you like. I have to go!"
With that, Wade practically sprinted out the door. It was obvious it was an emergency.
Hayden didn't leave right away. Accompanied by a staff member, he took a stroll around the academy.
Calling it an academy was an understatement; it was a high-end, exclusive Go club.
Watching a young girl intensely focused on a match in one of the private rooms, he couldn't help but see the young Hulda.
She would probably love this place. He mentally noted to text her later and see if she wanted to meet here tomorrow instead.
