"Dad..." Sylvie's eyes turned red the moment she walked through the gate.
"Don't call me Dad! I'm no father of yours! I certainly didn't raise my daughter to be some rich man's mistress, having his actual wife show up and ruin a wedding over it!" Dante didn't care that the Jewell family was standing right there. He yelled so loudly that people walking by on the street could easily hear him.
Elinor glanced nervously at the Jewells, whose faces had drastically darkened, and nudged her husband. "Alright, that's enough! Why are you bringing that up now?"
Turning back to Wade and Valery, Elinor forced a bright smile. "Please, come in! Come inside and sit down."
Once inside, Valery had fully expected the house to be stuffy, rundown, and sweltering. To her surprise, not only was the air conditioning blasting, but the furniture was brand new, including a very nice leather sofa.
Valery's tense expression relaxed slightly. This household was in much better shape than she had anticipated.
Elinor beamed proudly. "Mr. Jewell had his people install the AC and the fridge for us, and Sylvie bought the new furniture. Mr. Jewell is such a good man. He's always taken great care of Sylvie and our family."
Hearing this, Valery kept her thoughts to herself. An air conditioner and a fridge were pocket change, after all.
Cora, however, shot a teasing look at Herbert, who had remained completely silent since walking in. She leaned close and whispered, "And you tried to claim you didn't have feelings for Sylvie, Herbert. You hadn't even made things official, and you were already out here buying her family appliances."
If he had just been looking out for Sylvie personally, he could have used the excuse of taking care of an employee or student. But to extend that financial support to her parents and their home?
No ordinary boss or mentor in the world would go to those lengths.
Herbert stiffened, pressing his lips into a thin line, but said nothing.
Dante scoffed loudly. "Hmph. So, what exactly is your whole family doing here today?"
Sylvie had already called the night before to explain that the Jewells were coming to formally arrange the marriage. But despite knowing that, Dante was determined to play hard to get and establish dominance.
A heavy silence fell over the living room.
Thinking of Hulda made Herbert space out for a fraction of a second. After a noticeable delay, he gave a stiff nod. "Yes."
Sylvie took in Herbert's reaction, her eyes darkening for a brief moment before she quickly turned back to her father. "Dad, Herbert and I are serious about this. As long as you give us your blessing, we... we're going to get married!"
She bit her lower lip, her eyes shining with vulnerable pleading. "Please, Dad, don't make things hard for him, okay? He's been through a lot too..."
Seeing Sylvie so stubbornly fiercely defend and protect their son, even when she was the one being criticized, made Valery and Wade feel a sudden surge of affection for her. Their satisfaction with this future daughter-in-law skyrocketed.
Not only was she highly accomplished, but even when she was wronged, she was considerate and fiercely loyal to the man she loved.
She was a million times better than Hulda!
As the head of the household, Wade finally spoke up. "Our family is very fond of Sylvie. If you agree to this union, you can name your price for the wedding settlement and any other financial arrangements. Whatever you want, just say the word."
