At the mention of a financial settlement, Dante's eyes instantly lit up with greed.
However, he quickly remembered Sylvie's frantic warnings over the phone the night before and forced himself to rein it in. "We don't care about the money or an extravagant wedding. We only have one condition. If they're going to get married, they need to sign the papers immediately. That's the only way my wife and I will have any peace of mind. We absolutely cannot have a repeat of the disaster at that last wedding."
Wade nodded approvingly. "Of course. I've already made the arrangements. They'll go to the courthouse first thing Monday morning to get the marriage license."
Dante and Elinor exchanged a stunned look.
They had never imagined the Jewell family would be in even more of a rush than they were.
But this was perfect. Getting the legalities out of the way meant the wealth was locked down, leaving no room for unexpected complications.
A massive, genuine smile finally broke across Dante's face. "Well then, I suppose we're going to be in-laws!" He shot a sideways glance at Elinor. "What are you standing around for? Go pour our in-laws some tea!"
Elinor was smiling so hard her face looked like it might split. She eagerly rushed off to fetch the tea.
Sylvie's heart, which had been lodged in her throat since she walked through the door, finally settled back into her chest.
She sat down next to Herbert and proactively reached out to hold his hand.
Herbert's arm flinched involuntarily, his instinct screaming at him to pull away. He still hadn't adjusted to the sudden shift in their relationship. But when he met Sylvie's wide, doe-like eyes, he couldn't bring himself to reject her. He let her keep her grip on his hand.
The tension in the room evaporated. Elinor hurried over with freshly brewed tea and a platter of sliced fruit, setting them out on the coffee table.
It was only then that Valery noticed the little boy standing quietly in the corner. "Who's that child?"
Elinor paused midway through pouring a cup of tea. "Oh, that's Sylvie's youngest brother."
Valery already knew Sylvie had two brothers, and she knew the eldest was fully grown and working. She had assumed the youngest would at least be in middle school, but this boy looked exactly the same age as Miles.
Finn pursed his lips and looked back at Sylvie. Seeing her expression darken, he quickly corrected himself. "Thank you, Mrs. Jewell."
"He seems quite terrified of you, Sylvie."
Sylvie offered a gentle smile. "My parents were always working, so I practically raised Finn myself. I had to be the strict one, so he's naturally a bit intimidated by me."
Cora let out a bright laugh. "See? I knew there was a reason you were so great with kids! You have tons of experience! No wonder Miles adores you so much."
Since stepping into the house, Miles hadn't spoken a single word. He was nestled quietly against Sylvie's side.
Even hearing his aunt say his name didn't lift his gloomy mood.
It was strange. He loved Sylvie, and he desperately wanted her to be his new mom.
