She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 200

Cora's expression soured slightly when Miles shoved her away, but she kept her mouth shut. Ultimately, she was thrilled to see that the boy had bonded so deeply with Sylvie.

Sylvie stepped forward with a warm, reassuring smile and gently scooped him into her arms. "Alright, sweetie. I've got you."

Cradling the boy, she walked over to where Herbert was standing, his face still clouded with anger. She affectionately looped her free arm through his. "Come on, it's over now. The most important thing is that both boys are okay. Everything else is secondary. Let's head inside, alright?"

With that, she guided Herbert back toward the house.

Wade watched the way Miles clung to Sylvie, a faint smile of approval playing on his lips.

Hulda had never known how to raise a child, which was why Miles acted out the way he did. Now, with a highly educated, sophisticated woman like Sylvie stepping in to raise him, Wade was confident the boy would turn out exceptionally well.

...

Early Monday morning, Hulda took a cab to the institute long before the rush hour started.

Bored during the ride, she opened her phone. She didn't have many contacts on her social media feed, so Miles's post from the night before immediately caught her eye.

It was another selfie of him and Sylvie.

The caption was exactly the same as last time: [Me and my favorite mom!]

Hulda's thumb paused over the screen for a fraction of a second. The caption might be recycled, but the photo was brand new.

Clearly, Herbert and Sylvie's engagement had been finalized, prompting the boy to re-post his celebratory declaration.

This time, however, Hulda didn't even bother leaving a like. She just scrolled past it.

Yes, it still hurt.

After all, she had gone through a grueling pregnancy and nearly died to bring that child into the world.

But she refused to let it eat her alive or torture herself over it anymore.

She had already done absolutely everything a mother could possibly do.

As for the rest of it, she had no desire to force things.

"I am," Hulda smiled pleasantly. "I had to be, otherwise how would I manage to corner you?"

She wasn't hiding it.

She had specifically come in early today for the sole purpose of trapping him.

Brandon's face fell. "What do you mean, 'corner me'? If you need to talk, you can just ask."

Hulda fell into step beside him as they headed toward the main building. "Brandon, about the joint laboratory—"

"Oh! Right! Hulda!" Brandon cut her off abruptly, acting as if he'd just remembered something critical. "There's a Q&A session for the bidding contractors tomorrow. I've already assigned a specific team to handle the technical questions from the firms, but since you're the Director of the R&D center, it would be great if you could swing by and oversee things."

At the mention of actual work, Hulda's attention instantly pivoted. "Got it. I'll be there."

"Great, I'll forward you the exact time and location in an email shortly."

"Sounds good." Hulda nodded, walking with him for a few more steps before the thought of the joint lab popped back into her head. She opened her mouth to ask again, but Brandon beat her to the punch.
