If they weren't inside the institute, if she weren't currently the Director of the R&D Center, and if there weren't still people lingering in the room, her hand would have already connected with his cheek.
Herbert's face flushed red as he stared blankly at her.
The fierce look in her eyes clearly warned that if he uttered one more syllable, the slap was guaranteed.
He gaped at her, and it took several seconds for him to recover. He furrowed his brows deeply. "Hulda, when did you become so completely unreasonable!"
At that moment, Sylvie couldn't hold back anymore. She stepped forward with a sweet smile and intimately looped her arm through Herbert's.
The sudden physical contact made Herbert's body stiffen. He instinctively tried to pull his arm away, his eyes darting back to Hulda.
But Hulda couldn't care less; she was only filled with irritation. "Herbert, if you have nothing to tell me about Miles, then leave. I'm busy. I don't have time to waste on you."
Herbert swallowed hard.
What was this woman saying?
Talking to him was a waste of time?
In the past, she was always the one actively finding excuses and topics just to speak with him!
"Hulda, you—"
"Hulda!" Sylvie suddenly cut in, gripping Herbert's arm with one hand while pressing herself intimately against him with the other. To anyone watching, they looked like the picture-perfect newlywed couple.
"Mr. Jewell and I just got our marriage certificates yesterday. Once we're done with this busy period, we'll be holding the wedding ceremony. You absolutely must come."
Hulda let out a short laugh. "Heh, well congratulations. At least this wedding will be real."
Sylvie's face stiffened. She knew Hulda was mocking the fake wedding fiasco from before.
But to Hulda's surprise, instead of getting angry at the jab, Herbert went completely silent. Not only that, but he looked at her with a glimmer of twisted expectation in his eyes.
What was this man hoping for?
Was he hoping she'd crash the venue and make a massive scene just like last time?
"Director Atherton." Abby Corbett hurried over. "Why are you still here? Dr. Lynch and the others are waiting for you."
Remembering the massive workload ahead, Hulda's expression immediately tightened, shifting back into full professional mode. "Oh, right."
Without sparing Herbert or Sylvie another glance, she turned and marched straight for the doors.
Abby's eyes went wide. "Wait, really? You're bringing me?"
At Hulda's nod, Abby practically bobbed her head off her shoulders. "Yes, yes, yes! I'm in!"
Hulda knew she'd jump at the chance, but she still gave fair warning. "The conditions in the mountains are going to be pretty rough."
Abby immediately shook her head. "I don't mind roughing it!"
Getting to shadow the Director and gain experience? A little hardship was nothing!
Back in the room, Herbert's face was as dark as thunder.
What did she mean, 'shake her down for a wedding check'?
But past the flash of anger, he felt another wave of dazed shock.
Had Hulda really just rolled her eyes at him?
...
Hulda got off work a bit early today. Because she was heading to the mountainous region soon, she didn't go straight home. Instead, she stopped by an outdoor gear store.
