The actual bidding results were entirely out of her hands anyway.
Herbert's eyes darkened. He hadn't expected her to go to such lengths to distance herself from him.
Though displeased, he stepped under the security camera to join her.
"Spit it out. What's wrong with Miles?" Hulda cut straight to the point, unwilling to waste a single breath on him.
Herbert glared at her, but the words out of his mouth were, "Stay away from Caspian Sterling from now on. Do you hear me?"
Hulda's temple throbbed. "I thought this was about Miles?"
"Answer me," the man demanded stubbornly.
Hulda let out a bitter laugh, her gaze shifting to Sylvie standing just behind him. "In what capacity do you think you can interrogate me?"
Though Sylvie hadn't said a word, she was standing conspicuously close to Herbert.
Catching her in his periphery, Herbert seemed to suddenly remember that Sylvie was his legal wife now.
"I am the father of your son. What you do affects his future, which gives me every right to intervene."
He sounded incredibly self-righteous, his gaze turning overbearing. "Even though we're divorced, I'm not going to just wash my hands of you. We were married for seven years, and we still share Miles. I won't just stand by and watch you throw yourself into the abyss."
Hulda scowled at him as if he had lost his mind.
"Hulda, I can't believe how delusional you're being. Do you seriously think you can climb the social ladder through Caspian? Do you think he's actually a good guy? He's just using you as a novelty! A family like his will swallow an orphan like you whole and spit out the bones."
Herbert's chest heaved, his words growing sharper by the second. "What is it? Did I wrong you during your seven years as Mrs. Jewell? Is that why you're throwing all caution to the wind just for cash? Is it money? Tell me how much you want, I can give it to you!"
Listening to his increasingly absurd accusations, Hulda's anger hit a boiling point.
"Herbert, don't force me to slap you in front of all these people!"
It wouldn't be the first time she slapped him, anyway.
Herbert froze instantly, seeing the very real, burning fury in her eyes.
