She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 208

It was late into the night, but Herbert was still busy working in his study.

It wasn't until a soft knock came from Sylvie that he suddenly realized how late it had gotten.

"Come in," he said.

The door clicked open, and Sylvie stepped inside wearing a white silk slip dress.

Her long hair cascaded in loose waves over her shoulders, adding an undeniable allure to her appearance.

With wide, misty eyes like a doe, she blinked up at him. "Mr. Jewell, it's getting late. Time for bed."

Sylvie had worn sleepwear in front of him before, but it had always been incredibly conservative—either matching short-sleeve tops and long pants, or oversized nightgowns.

Because of that, Herbert had never felt anything was inappropriate.

But tonight's silk slip was undeniably sensual and revealing.

Herbert's face instantly grew uncomfortable. He cleared his throat and handed her the jacket draped over the back of his chair. "Put this on. It's chilly at night."

It was already summer, and the air conditioning was running. How could it be chilly?

Sylvie bit her lower lip slightly but accepted the jacket, letting it hang loosely over her shoulders. With moisture gathering in her eyes, she repeated, "Mr. Jewell, it's time for bed."

Herbert looked away, fixing his eyes on his monitor. "You go ahead. I still have some work to finish."

Sylvie lowered her head, her shoulders trembling delicately. "I know it's hard for you to accept right now, but we are husband and wife. You slept in the study last night..."

Hearing her say that, a sudden, inexplicable wave of irritation washed over him. "I told you, I'm busy."

Sylvie froze. When she looked back up, a tear was already tracking down her cheek. "You misunderstood me, Mr. Jewell. I just meant that if you're tired, you shouldn't sleep in the study. You can sleep in your own room... we can keep everything exactly the way it was before... I'm not forcing you to sleep in the same bed as me... I'm still trying to adjust to this myself... I... I'm just worried about your health..."

"Wait, an allowance too?" Sylvie's eyes widened in innocent shock.

"Yes." Herbert nodded. Seeing her look so utterly pure and ungreedy only deepened his guilt. "Victor Yates handles this. From now on, he'll transfer your allowance into your account every month."

That was how it had always worked with Hulda.

Every single month, Victor would dutifully wire a massive allowance into Hulda's account.

Thinking about it made Herbert's chest tighten with lingering resentment.

Over the past seven years, on top of two unlimited credit cards, she had received a staggering amount of cash every month. He firmly believed that for seven years, he had never once mistreated her.

He had provided her with the absolute pinnacle of luxury in every aspect of life—food, clothing, housing, and transport.
