So he just couldn't fathom it. She was an orphan with nothing. What more could she possibly want?
"Don't worry, Mr. Jewell! I will definitely take great care of Miles and our little home!" Sylvie nodded vigorously, looking incredibly earnest.
Herbert couldn't help but chuckle at her endearing display. "You really are a sweet girl, so easily satisfied."
Unlike some people, who relied on underhanded tactics to climb the social ladder from the very start. All those years living lavishly as Mrs. Jewell still hadn't been enough to satisfy her.
To the point where she didn't even hesitate to divorce him...
"There is one more thing..." Sylvie asked carefully. "Mr. Jewell, you told me to organize the study last time. But the one I'm using used to belong to Hulda, and it's still full of her things. I didn't dare move anything, so I just ended up stacking my own stuff everywhere. Can I either switch to a different study, or... maybe pack up her things?"
She closely watched Herbert's reaction. "Of course, I'll have Callie ask Hulda first. If she still wants them, I'll happily mail them all to her."
Herbert was currently swimming in a sea of negative emotions regarding Hulda. Hearing this, he immediately said, "You are the lady of this house now. However you want to arrange things, do it."
Relieved by his answer, Sylvie smiled brightly. "Okay, I understand. I'll make sure everything is handled properly."
Herbert trusted her completely, so he didn't bother asking what "handled properly" meant.
...
The next day, Justin strolled into the office in the afternoon again.
As soon as he stepped into the lobby, he ran into Herbert, who had just returned from an outside meeting.
"Where's your shadow? Where's the new bride?" Justin was clearly in a fantastic mood, his tone upbeat and teasing.
Herbert didn't particularly care for the 'new bride' moniker, but since it was Justin, he let it slide. "Sylvie took the afternoon off to buy some things."
Justin smiled and nodded. "Makes sense. You're newlyweds; you definitely need to go shopping."
Noticing how chipper Justin was, Herbert asked, "What's going on with you? Did another girl catch your eye?"
Knowing Justin as well as he did, Herbert recognized the classic signs of a man falling in love.
Justin paused for a second before flashing a brilliant smile. "Yeah. Caught my eye, and I really like her."
"Now that I think about it, it's been ages since I've seen you like this." Herbert was genuinely curious. "What kind of girl managed to make the great Justin Jameson finally settle down?"
Justin looked at Herbert, his eyes reflecting a subtle, complicated emotion. "A deeply fascinating girl. She knows her wine, she can fix cars, she loves hiking, and she has an incredibly impressive career. Honestly, she's amazing!"
Herbert was taken aback. He suddenly realized that this time, Justin wasn't just experiencing his usual fleeting infatuation.
It was a notification.
He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was a transaction alert.
[Your credit card ending in 0843 was charged $12,450.00 at ***.]
"Oh? Dropping over twelve grand in one go. What did you buy?" Justin asked.
Herbert hadn't tried to hide the screen, so Justin had caught the number at a glance.
"I didn't buy anything." Herbert frowned slightly. "It was Sylvie."
Sylvie must have used the supplementary card to buy something.
He didn't care about the twelve thousand dollars. What bothered him was that this was the very first time he'd ever noticed—or received—a transaction alert for the supplementary cards.
But over the last seven years, while those cards were in Hulda's possession...
He hadn't received a single notification. Not one...
