She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 211

Herbert's eyes flashed with displeasure. Did his parents really think he was that impulsive and reckless?

"Where's Sylvie?"

Sylvie had taken the afternoon off and left early. She should be home by now.

Callie pointed upstairs. "Ms. Sinclair is up in the study."

"Mm." Herbert nodded and headed up the stairs.

"Um, sir..." Callie took a hesitant step forward, stopping him.

Herbert paused. "Is something wrong?"

Callie looked at his expressionless face and hesitated. Finally, she forced a smile. "Nothing. I just wanted to let you know dinner is almost ready."

"Alright. Got it." Herbert nodded and continued to the second floor.

Downstairs, Callie watched him disappear around the corner and let out a heavy sigh.

She had actually wanted to ask about her paycheck.

By all accounts, her wages were long overdue.

When Hulda was here, she was always paid right on time every month. There had never been a single delay.

I'll just ask again during dinner, Callie thought to herself before turning back to the kitchen.

On the second floor, Sylvie was so absorbed in her work inside the study that she didn't even notice Herbert walk in.

"What are you working on?"

The deep voice above her made Sylvie jump. She clutched a hand over her chest and stood up. When she saw it was Herbert, a brilliant smile bloomed across her face. "You're back! I was so focused, I didn't even hear you come in."

Seeing her look so apprehensive, Herbert offered a faint, reassuring smile and shook his head. "I gave it to you so you could use it. It's yours. I can more than afford it."

Sylvie let out a huge sigh of relief before leaning in affectionately. "I knew you were the best!"

Just then, Callie announced that dinner was ready and called them downstairs.

In the dining room, Sylvie sat directly across from Herbert, chatting with him animatedly, completely ignoring Callie's presence.

Callie stood by the table, slightly taken aback.

In the past, Sylvie had always been the first to jump up and help set the table and serve the food.

Noticing Callie frozen by the table, Sylvie looked up, blinking in feigned confusion. "Callie, what's wrong? Aren't you going to set the table?"

Callie's face stiffened. She quickly forced a smile and waved her hands. "I'm on it."
