Just then, Sylvie and Callie, having heard the commotion, came rushing into the room.
"What happened? What's going on?" Sylvie hurried in, her face etched with panic. Seeing Herbert holding a furious, dangling Miles, she quickly rushed over. "Herbert, what are you doing? Put him down!"
Instead of handing the boy over, Herbert brushed her arms away and carried Miles over to the wall. "Sylvie, stay out of this! This boy is completely out of control."
He set Miles down firmly. "You stand in this corner and don't move a muscle!"
Sylvie's eyes swept over the shattered plastic pieces covering the floor. Her expression shifted subtly. She glanced at Finn, who was cowering on the bed, before turning a look of pure concern onto her husband. "What exactly happened?"
Callie looked just as stressed. "Yes, sir. Why are you punishing the young master out of nowhere?"
"Out of nowhere?" Herbert's face was like thunder, his voice freezing cold. "When I walked in here, Miles had Finn pinned to the floor and was beating him."
"What?" Sylvie gasped, looking at her brother in shock. "Finn, are you okay?"
Finn sobbed, shaking his head. He pressed his lips tightly together, refusing to speak, looking every bit the tragic, bullied victim.
Sylvie let out a soft sigh of relief and turned back to Herbert. "Forget it. Boys will be boys. They roughhouse, it's normal. Finn is fine, so don't be too hard on Miles."
Finn looked up at his sister, his small hands tightening around his knees.
But Sylvie's gentle pleading did nothing to extinguish Herbert's anger. If anything, it only fueled it. "No, we are not letting this go. This is a matter of principle."
During the last incident at the Sinclair house, when Miles pushed Finn, Herbert had desperately wanted to discipline him then.
"You hit me and yell at me without even asking what happened! You're a bad dad! I hate you!" Miles wailed, completely overwhelmed. Having never felt this profoundly wronged in his entire life, he screamed until his face turned purple. His little body shook so violently it looked like he might pass out from the crying.
Seeing this, Callie immediately rushed forward and scooped the boy into her arms. "Sir, I'm going to take him out to calm down. It's not good for a child to cry this hard."
Though Herbert was furious, he was still Miles's father. He gritted his teeth and gave a stiff nod.
Once Callie carried the wailing boy out of the room, Sylvie let out a heavy sigh and slowly began gathering the shattered pieces of plastic. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have brought Finn here before everything was completely ready. I was just going to let him sleep in Miles's room for a few days until the new bedroom was finished. I never imagined..."
She looked up at Herbert, her eyes rimmed with red. "I don't think Miles is ready to accept Finn yet. Maybe it's best if I just send Finn back. Miles is the priority."
"No!" Finn scrambled to the edge of the bed, falling to his knees and begging through his tears. "Sylvie, please don't send me back! It's my fault! I shouldn't have touched his things. I just... I'd never seen anything like it before, and I loved it so much... I only wanted to hold it. When he tried to take it back, I got scared and dropped it... It's all my fault. I'll apologize to Miles. Please don't make me leave..."
